Thank you Regina L. Nagger GIS Developer City of Miami Public Works Department 444 SW 2nd Avenue Eighth Floor Miami, FL 33130 Phone: (305) 416-1749 Fax: (305) 416-1278 E-mail: rhagger@ci.miami.fl.us Original Message From: Domitila Fox [mailto:foxd@fiu.edu] Sent: Sunday, November 08, 2009 6:26 PM To: Hagger, Regina Subject: RE: #09-428 Miami Senior High School Tree Removal TO: Regina Nagger and the permit board officials FROM: Domitila (Tillie) Fox 302 Beacom Blvd. Miami, F1 33135 205-642-7973 I have lived with my family at the above address for 49 years and am also an alumni of Miami High. I am writing to object to the removal of the 8 bishopwood trees (on 3rd street between 24th and 25th avenue) for the following reasons: 1. THESE TREES ARE THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN A RESIDENTIAL AREA AND THE UNSIGHTLY BACK OF THE SCHOOL PROPERTY. Without them, it would give the appearance of a parking lot and that the homes were part of the school and not of our neighborhood. 2. THE TREES PROVIDE OUR ENVIROMENTAL DEFENSE AGAINST THE NOXIOUS FUMES AND POLLUTION CREATED BY THE ALREADY EXCESSIVE TRAFFIC ON 3RD STREET AS A RESULT OF AN OVER EXPANDING SCHOOL. 3.THE TREES AND RIGHT OF WAY, BY MAKING THE STREET NARROWER, SLOW DOWN THE DANGEROUS TRAFFIC WHICH IS UNSAFE FOR CHILDREN, PEDESTRIANS, AND RESIDENTS. At certain hours it is even difficult to pull out of one's driveway. Widening the street woud encourage more traffic and speeding cars. In fact, we are going to request more trees be planted and traffic circles be installed for our safety. 1 4. THE REMOVAL OF THE TREES AND THE RIGHT OF WAY WOULD MAKE THE STREET BARREN AND WILL HAVE A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON PROPERTY VALUES. It would make living along that street undesirable and drive away tenants and property owners. 5. THE TREES PROVIDE A LARGE ATTRACTIVE CANOPY TO THIRD STREET LIKE THE REST OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. It took over thirty years to develop and you cannot justify destrying nature. 6. THE TREES ACT LIKE A NATURAL BARRIER AGAINST NOISE AND STRONG WINDS. They provide a natural habitat for birds and a park -like appearance. Any removal of the high fence would endager our lives, as I was one of the persons hit by a baseball during school hours. 7. THE TREES ALSO CREATE A GREEN BOUNDARY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL, PROVIDING THE STUDENTS WITH THE PRIVACY OF THEIR SEPARATE SPACE, SO THEY FEEL THEY ARE NOT PLAYING IN SOMEONE ELSE'S YARD. As an experienced educator (I have been a professor at FIU sor over 3 decades) and alumni of Miami High, it is important to maintain the historical legacy, and provide the students with the important experience and spirit of high school life. At the current rate of over expansion the school is resembling a small version of our airport. 8. WE NEED TO 'GREEN UP' OUR NEIGHBORHOODS AND NOT DESTROY THEM. Those trees were planted over 3 decades ago to beautify the neighborhood, and I was one of the participants of that project. If these trees were to be removed due to some horticultural problem and disease, they muust be replaced with at least as many trees of comparable coverage and size. 9. REMOVAL OF THE TREES WILL COMMERCIALIZE A RESIDENTIAL AREA. The high school has already encroached by purchasing the homes on the perimeter of the school, especially on 24th avenue (now part of the football field) and those across the high school along 25th avenue. This avenue (25th) is now commercial and part of the school. Since 25th avenue is also wider and next to the building, this would provide a better place for a bus stop. Also, the land by Flagler Street is also well suited. 10. IT IS INSENSITIVE AND A CAUSE FOR CONCERN THAT IN AN AREA WHERE 99% OF THE RESIDENTS ARE LATIN AND MANY DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH SIGNS ARE NOT ALSO POSTED IN SPANISH. Local residents on several streets are offended that small papers, resembling notice for garage sales, were posted in English only. There are also rental units, so property owners normally do not drive by that often. THE PROPERTY OWNERS IN THE NEIBORHOOD SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY MAIL, IN BOTH LANGUAGES, DICLOSING THE PLANS TO BUILD A BUS STATION. In order to maintain the integrity of this residential area, I petition that the trees not be removed.
