Thompson • City Clerk Positive Notes A newsletter to share positive information about the VEC and it's Community Partners Volume I, Issue 4 mar: 1 2008 "Employment in the midst of recession Many people are looking for a job and some are feeling quite fearful because it's rumored that the nation is suffering an economic "recession". At the i._IEC, the "recession " is an just another opportunity to help people. And that is exactly what the UEC does... helps people prepare for work and find jobs. "There is a lot more to getting a job than most people think" says UEC's Program Director , Sharon Harr& " First you have to get people ready for the workplace. After they have been out of a job for along time, they begin to feel despondent and are out of practice with every- thing from dressing properly , communicating effectively and even just getting up on time . We have to work with them from the inside out, starting from their personal perception of themselves and leading up to actual counseling about how to conduct themselves in the work- r_ lace and how to keep the job we get them. " '-auline Livatt, who coordinates support services at UEC observes that most of the clients need Imore than a job. "In fact" , she says , "they need so much before they can actually go to a job and perform properly and that's where the commu- nity partners come in. "We are so appreciative to the spirit of the Partners", says Executive Erector , CC Holloman . "They come in and pour out such love and commitment... they really love working with the clients and helping in any way they can. Its encouraging to see the Mentors from the Ministerial Alliance work with their Mentees.. They help them get on their feet, get to work and they help with a lot more. Such as encouraging them through the difficult times, helping them get clothing and food and trans- portation. Mentors work with gem on their personal strengthening and community partners, like Helen Bentley Health Center provide health screens and counseling. Together, we survive the recession and get to work"! • • • • • • • UEC's Island District Employment Program Current Partners +arms' r nr+tuul Grinl %Iiui-rl•ri;1f . iIian+rr 11r11rsi11 1:rosr i.tlrr•.. fur. \'li 44r41•ss 1S1 sstirti 1 :Isslily Sl•rvirr I'rrlirr flfr.-\I.► f-km+C I)i iril'f i14'rris:srri. t,-11riuiiutt Palmy i.rurrlr :1rh iar Si. PRICE... answers to your health questions Our focus this month is : Sexually Transmitted diseases Question: Can anyone get a sexual!" transmitted disease.' Dr rice Oh yes.. Anyone can get them .. YOU can get a sexually transmitted disease if you are not careful! Now don't get it twisted, I am not against SEX ... SEX is a good thing God put here for us to enjoy.. But we are expected to handle it responsibly. That means we need to be with one partner and always be protected. First of all there are more sexually transmitted diseases than you might think. The common ones that most people know about are Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Herpes and of course the dreaded H1V Aides. But there are other variations of STD that are sometimes not even easily detected until it is too late. More African Americans die of STDs than other ethnics. No one has to die of these diseases if they are caught in time . The best way to prevent STDs are to have protected sex... yep that means you men will have to use condoms and you ladies will need to make sure he is wearing that protection too. Be careful what you allow.. You never know who has a disease so play it safe rather than sorry. Nowadays there is a lot of freedom that gets people into lots of trouble sexually. So don't be a fool.. Remember the rule .. Stay Protected! Teens.. You need to gust abstain from sex.. There is plenty time for you to do that .. Right now, you need to focus on getting and education and a skill so you can have a decent chance in life.. When you get married, you can have ail the sex you want, safely! Did you know that some of the worlds most famous people had STDs? Some died with the disease and some went blind... My advice is to make sure you know your partner, don't have too many partners and use protection.!
