ami is
the only
major U.S.
city founded
by a woman —
but there is
no statue,
no historical
marker and no public recognition
of Julia Tuttle's importance to Miami.
at is changing. Donors arc
now stepping forward and an official
"Call to Artists" competition is under
way so that Miami can honor its
founder with a statue and historical
plaque. Two civic organizations and
a private firm are leading this effort:
• City of Miami Commission on the
Status of Women (Miami COSW)
• Miami -Dade County Commission
for Women (CFW)
• The Related Group
As these dynamic organizations envision
Miami's future, they invite you to join

r
ulia Tuttle's view of Mianii
was indeed visionary.
She predicted
that the small
settlement
on Biscayne
Bay would
"eventually
be one of
the greatest
and most
important cities, financially,
commercially and residentially, as well as
the most important deep water port in all
of the southland."
G ; Gow right she was! In 1896,
Julia Tuttle gave land on the
north bank of the Miami River to
the expanding
Flagler railroad,
convincing
Henry Flagler
to extend
his rail line
south to
Miami. The
extension was
built quickly,
and that same year
the City of Miami was incorporated.
CPG statue to honor Miami's
visionary founder is long overdue.
Join us in this effort. All donations
are being deposited in a City of Miami
Trust Fund established exclusively for
the Julia Tuttle statue, estimated to cost
$250,000. Donations may be deductible
for federal income tax purposes
Ito the extent allowed by law. The statue
!will be located in downtown Miami,
'supervised by an Oversight Committee
of experts and community activists.
