Subject: RE: Update on Pedestrian Overpass
The final report for the Pedestrian/Bicycle Crossing Study for the Metrorail Stations along US-1 Corridor was
completed. As part of the study, a screening criterion was established to identify if the intersection warranted the
investigation of a pedestrian overpass as a possible solution to pedestrian safety. The Coconut Grove Station
site did not meet the warrant criterion for investigation of pedestrian overpasses; however, the results were close
enough to include pedestrian overpass alternatives that will be evaluated in addition to geometric/operational
safety improvements.
MDT Leasing and Joint Development is currently working on a joint development project (19 story mixed -use
transit center with retail, parking garage, and office space) at the Coconut Grove Station that is expected to be
completed within 1 1/2 years: The Highway Division -of the Miami Dade Public Works Department is- currently
working on a roadway beatification project on 27th Ave from US-1 a to Bayshore Dr. Once these projects are
completed and the pedestrian volumes have increased, MDT will then reevaluate the feasibility of the pedestrian
overpass in the Coconut Grove area to determine if a bridge is warranted.
MDT is working diligently and currently coordinating with various departments and agencies for review and
possible implementation of the alternatives for the pedestrian safety improvements near this station which
includes fencing. These alternative improvements include the implementation of geometrical/operational safety
improvements (i.e. pedestrian crosswalks, signals, and timing modifications) and/or the construction of a
pedestrian overpass to better accommodate safer and pedestrian friendly crossing opportunities. The study of
these alternatives for Coconut Grove Station will be presented and documented in a separate report to address
the comments and concerns of The Florida Department of Transportation and Miami Dade County Public Works
Department. MDT will have to perform and provide additional information and studies required by these agencies
before their approval of these safety alternatives can be granted.
