Through a cooperative effort between
elementary school students, their parents,
educators, community leaders and
businesses, a series of community -focused
activities will be created and implemented to
foster a supportive environment for young
readers.
One of the program's key elements is the
Community Reading Corner - a public space
turned into a designated reading area,
complete with reading chairs, floor pillows
and a variety of reading materials. There are
currently 13 Community Reading Corners in
Miami -Dade County.
Local celebrities supporting Reading in
Progress include Alonzo Mourning of the
Miami Heat, Singer Gloria Estefan, Jason
Taylor of the Miami Dolphins, Dontrelle Willis
of the Marlins and Olympic Ice Speed Skater
Jennifer Rodriguez

Creating a Community of Learning
Research supports that encouraging a love for
reading can:
help children learn and prepare them for
the challenges they will face in the 21st
century
create strong communities through
education
improve lives by unlocking opportunities
create a genuine joy of reading
The role of the community
family centers can encourage and support
learning for children and families
offer the opportunity for students to learn
outside of school
bring children together and make reading
part of a traditionally "fun" environment

INITIATIVE
BY ELtZABETN SANTOSry News Se,ce
About 25 excited children
recently marched single file
into a bright yellow book -
tilled room called the Reading
Corner at the Overtown Youth
Center. That's where the
Miami -Dade County Public
Schools launched a literacy
initiative to promote the
importance and the joy of
reading.
Wearing identical over-
sized "Reading in Progress"
T-shirts, the students from
Frederick Douglass, Phillis
Wheatley and Paul Laurence
Dunbar elerncntary schools
shuffled into the room to hear
Miami Heat center Alonzo
Mourning read from his favor-
ite childhood book, Where the
Wild Things Are.
As Mourning entered, the
children murmured to each
other. "He's so tall," one whis-
pered. Another asked, "Is he a
basketball player
Then they swarmed around
hitn as he sat down to read the
story by Maurice Sendak
about a naughty boy named
Max who is sent to bed with-
out supper after wearing his
wolf suit to dinner. During the
night, Max's room becomes a
world of forests and seas
where the wild things live and
Max is crowned their king.
At the end of the book. it is
revealed that Max was only
dreaming of his adventure
with the wild things.
Mourning used the refer-
ence to dreams to talk to the
children about their dreams
and how reading ran help ful-
fill them..
"A lot of times I didn't want
to read because I was told to,"
he told the children. "As I got
older, I learned its importance.
Reading is like food for the
brain."
Mourning said it is impor-
tant that children see how
reading can be fun. making it
not a responsibility but more
of a fun activity.
He put his fun theory to
practice by reading the entire
book in several animated
tones. And. rather than just
reading tothe elementary stu-
dents, he drew them into the
reading process. He actively
involved them by asking ques-
tions about the story as he
turned each page. Even the
audience of reporters, educa-
tors and others joined in by
roaring when the wild things
roared and creating other
sound effects when necessary.
Cindy Rubio, a fifth -grader
at Frederick Douglass Elemen-
tary, was impressed,
"I liked the book because it
was funny. And the pictures
were fun, too." said Cindy, II.
Mourning's Read with Me
session, which took place Nov.

who attended the hour-long
inaugural event headlined by
Mourning. "The initiative is an
effort of schools and commu-
nities. Whatever can be done
in schools can be done here."
The initiative takes a three-
fold approach. The first is to
educate parents about the
importance of literacy and
how they can help their chil-
dren, according Joseph Garcia,
spokesman for the school dis-
trict.
Thu second is to celebrate
reading by offering incentive
activities such as the celebrity
Read with Me program- These
events feature a focal celebrity
reading his or her favorite
childhood book in one of the
Reading Corners in the target
communities. The third step is
to motivate teachers to
bocomu masters as teaching
reading to children.
Despite the emphasis on
fun, the children understand
that reading is a stepping
stone to success,
"You can make big changes
in your life by reading," said
fourth grader AIe;is Wooden,
I1, of Frederick Douglass Ele-
mentary. "You can go to col-
lege and get a good job."
