SUPPLEMENT TO AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY FORM
Background Information: Renaming S.E. 1 Avenue to "Brickell Plaza" and S.E. 2
Avenue to "Brickell Avenue"
The original name of S.E. 1 Avenue between S.E. 8 Street and S.E. 12 Street shown on
the recorded plat of Miami was "Miami Avenue". Subsequent to the standardization of
roadway numbers and names, the City Commission, by Ordinance, designated this
roadway as "S.E. 1 Avenue". Due to its proximity to the Brickell Avenue office district
and the desire to establish a connection to this office district, this roadway has commonly
been unofficially identified as "Brickell Plaza". The usage has become so dominant that
many of the official City maps, including the City of Miami Official Zoning Atlas,
identifies this roadway as "Brickell Plaza". The City has received a request from
property owners to officially rename S.E. 1 Avenue as "Brickell Plaza".
The Central Business District, like many commercial and residential areas of the City, is
experiencing major new development. Name recognition and continuity of roadway
network benefits clients and visitors to Downtown Miami. The City has received a
request from property owners to extend the name of Brickell Avenue into the downtown
core by renaming S.E. 2 Avenue between S.E. 2 Street and the Miami River as `Brickell
Avenue". This recognized name will provide a link between the important corporate and
financial areas on both sides of the Miami River.
