Thompson City Clerk DATE : April 21, 2005 FILE : SUBJECT : Letter from Miami -Dade County Supervisor of Elections requesting to change date of General election REFERENCES : May 12, 2005 agenda ENCLOSURES: (1) We are in receipt of a letter from Lester Sola, Supervisor of Elections for Miami -Dade County, requesting that the City reschedule the general election currently scheduled for Tuesday, November 8, 2005 (see attached). As stated in City of Miami Charter Sec. 7, "a general municipal election for the mayor and city commissioners shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in odd number years." The Miami -Dade Supervisor of Elections is requesting that we change the date of the Municipal General Election from November 8, 2005 to a new date of November 1, 2005. Changing the date to November 1, 2005 would coincide with the elections of several other municipalities. Pursuant to Florida Statute 100.3605 Conduct of municipal elections.--- "(2) The governing body of a municipality may, by ordinance, change the dates for qualifying and for the election of members of the governing body of the municipality and provide for the orderly transition of office resulting from such date changes." A discussion item on this issue has been scheduled for Commission consideration on the May 12, 2005 Commission meeting agenda. By separate letter, I am formally requesting that Miami -Dade County Supervisor of Elections, Lester Sola or a member of his staff attend the May 12, 2005 Commission Meeting to answer any questions that you may have related to this issue.
