Thompson City Clerk I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you all of the compliments Broward County Parks and Recreation Division has received from elected officials and our park users concerning the new Castaway Island Water Playground at T. Y. Park. Everyone who has used this facility or seen it has been very impressed with the many features and bright colors which make it a special attraction in our regional park. This facility will be a major revenue producer for our Division, and I am sure we will be constructing others in the very near future. In addition to the accolades we have received since its opening, I was most impressed with the behind the scenes cooperation during the actual construction of this facility. All of your staff with whom we came into contact during this period displayed a really sincere effort to make this a quality facility. I was also impressed with the day to day cooperation between our staff and your company's staff in reaching the end product of opening day. Please share with your staff my thanks for a job well done in constructing a facility we can all be proud of BH:EG BROWARD COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS — An Equal Oppodunity Employer and Provider of Services Norman Abramowitz Scott I. Thompson City Clerk It is very exciting to hear that the North Community Park Project is being submitted for the 2000 National Design -Build Award Competition presented by the Design -Build Institute of America. I am very proud of the Park and appreciate the outstanding job that your company did in constructing the Park. The final product has surpassed all our expectations and goals for the facility. When we started the process of looking for a Design -Build company to construct our park we were looking for a design that would meet the needs of our various Sports Organizations. This required some imagination and engineering skills to make it work properly. We also were looking for the park to be completed in time for our Baseball Season which started in February 2000. During your initial presentation before short listing, your conceptual drawings and time frame met what we were looking for, but we did not know if it would meet our budget. Once you were short listed in the top three and we were able to discuss the project further, it became apparent to City staff that your company was the most qualified for the job. Through further negotiations we were able to reach an agreed upon price that kept us within budget and gave us the facility we required to meet our customers needs. Throughout the construction project you and your employees did an outstanding job of working with City staff and the City User Groups to make adjustments to assure our goals were met. The final project exceeded everyones expectations, not only are the facilities exceptional, but the project was completed ahead of schedule and within the budget. Since the parks opening on December 31, 1999 I have received nothing but compliments on the Park. The fields drain excellently and are being used every day. Both our Soccer and Baseball programs go on and on about how great the facility is. We just completed a State Little League Baseball Tournament and the Little League District Director made a comment that these maybe the best municipal fields in Broward County. We have also received compliments from our daily patrons who use the picnic pavilions, playground and walking/jogging path. Nothing but compliment after compliment. In conclusion I just want to say that this Park has provided the City with an outstanding Facility. It has proven that the Design -Build process works and is the best way to meet your goals for a project. Good luck with the 2000 National Design -Build Award. That's why a group of concerned parents came up with the idea of building an aquatic center that could host a variety of public swim programs. Their primary challenges: "Where will we get the money?" and "Who can we trust to build it?" The money—$3.5 million —came from community member Barbara Jacobs. Ms. Jacobs, then -owner of the Cleveland Indians, was searching for a way to replace revenue the community lost when her team had to relocate their Spring Training Camp after Hurricane Andrew. The builder —Recreational Design & Construction —met the "experience and vision" criteria. RDC installed the first Myrtha pool system in the U.S. and is recognized as the premiere design -build firm for innovative aquatic facilities. RDC's experience was vital to overcoming the project's challenges: low sea level, porous coral and EPA restrictions. Continuously dewatering, at the rate of 27,000 gallons a minute through a series of 11 on -site injection wells, preserved the environmentally sensitive landscape. And by working closely with subcontractors and using state-of-the-art accounting software, RDC was able to determine that the existing self-contained sanitary system was large enough to handle future needs, resulting in a $20,000 cost reduction. Because water is expensive in the Keys, a state-of-the-art filtration system that puts out drinking quality water was installed. In the event of a storm, the pool can be turned into an emergency water supply. There is also a back -wash reclamation system that re -filters the water and returns it to the pool as make-up water, again saving water —and money. Today, the Jacobs Aquatic Complex teems with Keys' kids, and includes two stainless steel Myrtha Pool Systems a competition pool with attached dive well and a 20' X 40' learn -to -swim pool. A zero -entry ramp for disabled swimmers and a 2,800-sq.-ft. themed water playground, decking, outdoor lighting and multi -purpose concession/equipment/restroom building complete the venue. The facility is unique in that it was built with private funds and is privately operated and funded for public use. Thompson City Clerk Myrtha, Myrtha Everywhere In 1995, the City of Coral Springs selected Recreational Design & Construction to design -build a state-of-the-art aquatic center beginning with a 25-meter by 25-yard Myrtha pool system —the first prefabricated stainless steel swimming pool system ever installed in the U.S. Adhering to the City's extremely tight construction schedule helped earn RDC the nickname of the "On Time and Under Budget" design -build firm from City officials. Several years later, RDC was contracted by the City to modify the Center's dive well and renovate the 50-meter pool using the latest Myrtha RenovAction System. In 2002, aided by a grant from Broward County Swim Central —a countywide organization dedicated to teaching children water safety the City of Coral Springs again selected RDC to add a 36-foot by 65-foot learn -to -swim pool to the Aquatic Center. This latest addition meets ADA requirements and is shallow at both ends with minimal depth at the center. The specially fabricated, flexible pool floor provides comfort for beginning swimmers and those engaged in water aerobics and hydrotherapy. RDC was instrumental in guiding the City through the grant application process. Thompson City Clerk Recreational Design & Construction, Inc. completed a 50 meter x 25 yard Myrtha multipurpose swimming pool (teaching, recreational and competitive) and an SCS water play feature for the City of Plantation at the Central Park Aquatic Complex. This fast track design/build project also included the repair of the existing 50 meter pool, diving towers and renovation of the entire complex to comply with ADA access requirements. The Myrtha Pool is the most advanced swimming pool system (German technology and Italian fabrication) to be introduced in the United States in the past 50 years. It is a prefabricated stainless steel pool with a permanently laminated/factory applied PVC liner, bonded to low carbon stainless steel walls, to ensure longevity and a leak proof system. It is the only pool in the world of its kind. The Myrtha pool was used in the Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996 and Barcelona 1992. The SCS water play system provides a variety of unique and continuous flowing water effects as water jets, buckets, hand wheels, pull ropes and gushing water interspersed around the structure at various heights. "Historically, our capital projects have been over bid, involved change orders and late. We selected RDC for our first Design/Build project and were impressed with their professionalism and team approach. As a result of their expertise and cost saving approach, we were able to build our aquatic facility within budget and on time!" Priscilla A. Thompson City Clerk Croissant Park Croissant Park and Lauderdale Manors Aquatic Facilities Fort Lauderdale Neighborhoods Get in the Swim Rather than build one giant facility, the City of Fort Lauderdale in a joint venture with the Broward County School Board decided to renovate and modify two neighborhood swimming pools and turn them into aquatic parks. Built on school board property, the facilities serve Croissant Park and Lauderdale Manors residents. Because the two existing facilities were serving the needs of the community and residents had nowhere else to go, a speedy solution was critical. After responding to an RFP, the Design -Build professionals at Recreational Design & Construction were awarded the job based on their specialized experience and their ability to accommodate tight scheduling without sacrificing quality. The dual project was a combination of modification, improvement and new construction, including upgrading the existing pools, adding family aquatic play areas and meeting ADA requirements. Croissant Park Aquatic Facility, with its zero - entry ramp, enables wheelchair -bound swimmers to roll right into the water; while the Lauderdale Manors Aquatic Facility has a lift for the disabled. Each aquatic facility has its own community building, restroom facilities and lifeguard offices. Upon completion, the Lauderdale Manors Aquatic Facility won the 2002 Community Appearance award. Thompson City Clerk The Star of the Coral Springs Park System At 38 acres, North Community Park has all the amenities you'd expect to find in the City of Coral Springs' largest park. The project included four regulation -size baseball fields, two Olympic -size soccer/football fields, 1.75-mile jogging/rollerblade trail, a two-story community building, restroom facilities strategically located for easy access, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, picnic shelter, playground and preserved environmental area. The Design -Build professionals at Recreational Design & Construction specialize in parks and recreation facilities and know precisely what products and construction techniques perform best in any given situation. Drainage and lighting challenges, plus a limited budget, required RDC to apply its years of experience to produce the premiere park the city envisioned. Using the latest laser -grading technology, RDC cut and balanced the site to accommodate proper drainage for ball field specifications to include "dry" play one hour after a heavy downpour. By installing high -mast sports lights and energy -saving ballasts lamps, RDC was able to reduce the City's operating costs and create a non -glare environment that doesn't disturb nearby neighborhoods. Constructing the buildings using engineered masonry instead of standard tie columns and beams resulted in considerable savings of time and money. "I am very proud of [North Community] Park and appreciate the outstanding job that {RDC} did in constructing the Park. Its first project —the Coral Springs Tennis Center —was named "Outstanding Tennis Facility by the U.S. Tennis Association in 1995 and 96; and was recognized by Tennis Industry magazine as "Facility of the Year" in 1995. So, when the City of Sunrise was ready to transform its 1970's Tennis Club into a state-of-the-art tennis facility, it turned to RDC. Partnering with world-renowned tennis facility designer, Sheldon Westervelt and Global Tennis Consultants, RDC built the cutting -edge facility with Davis Cup tournament events in mind. Attention to detail and ongoing inspections to ensure that quality was built in at every level resulted in the coveted "Facility of the Year" award in 2001. Phase II added 10 Lee Hydro courts (clay) and 4 Decoturf (cushioned) courts along with tournament/ticket entrances, paver walkways/promenades to the clubhouse, pro shop and other amenities completed in Phase I, 1998. Extensive landscaping and on -court amenities such as shade shelters, refrigerated drinking fountains and bench -seat planters contribute to the world -class facility's tennis -friendly ambiance.
