Although we did not reach the level of achievement that occurred during the 1990s when the Committee received funding from the City, the Committee continued to provide benefits by adding landscaping at the City of Miami Cemetery, along SR-112 and along SR-836 (approximately 60 trees), as well as maintaining previously planted trees in those areas as well as along 1-95 (approximately 600 of the trees previously planted by the Committee were fertilized, pruned and/or mulched). We also helped continue the annual Royal Poinciana Fiesta. We anticipate greatly expanding our level of achievement in the coming year now that the City is providing funds for our use again. I do not believe that there is any other board that would better serve the function of this committee, nor do I know of any reason to amend the ordinance creating the Committee now that the residency requirement has been waived except that I believe term limits should also be waived or deleted. This is a nonpolitical committee consisting solely of volunteers whose only interest is to beautify and environmentally enhance the City of Miami. As such, they should be allowed to serve and contribute as long as they are able and willing. There has been no cost to the City in maintaining this Committee in recent years. However, I believe the work achieved in the 90s when the Committee was receiving funds clearly demonstrate the abiding benefits of the work we accomplished and that it was an extremely cost effective use of taxpayer dollars. We are proud of our past accomplishments, and look forward to being able to significantly increase the benefits provided by our Committee in 2004 Very truly yours, Stephen D. Pearson 11-MiaComARep
