SUBJECT: Police Department Hiring and
Staffing Update
As per the request of the City Commission during the October 10, 2013, City Commission meeting, I
present this memorandum, which outlines the Police Department's manpower allocation and hiring
progress.
The Miami Police Department is currently operating with 108 sworn vacancies, although 80 of those
vacancies/positions were recently added at the beginning of the 2015 Fiscal Year. There are 14 sworn
members of the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2015.
The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress since the March 12, 2015 City
Commission meeting:

•
Nineteen (19) applicants hired year-to-date in 2015.
•
Two (2) applicants hired since last City Commission meeting.
•
Five (5) applicants awaiting medical clearance to hire.
•
Nine (9) applicants undergoing background investigation (expected to be
hired by April 2015, if they pass all pre -employment hurdles).
•
Orientation for new list of police officer applicants scheduled for April 6-9,
2015 (400 applicants invited).
Crime Scene
•
Orientation session conducted for Crime Scene Investigator I applicants on
Investigator I
March 17, 2015.
Emergency
•
Orientation session for Emergency Dispatcher applicants scheduled for
Dispatcher
March 24, 2015.
The table on page 2 is a snapshot of the Police Department's hiring progress and staffing levels from April
2014 through February 2015.
