SUBJECT: Police Department Hiring and
Staffing Update
As per the request of the City Commission during the October 10, 2013, City Commission meeting, I
present this memorandum, which outlines the Police Department's manpower allocation and hiring
progress.
The Miami Police Department is currently operating with 100 sworn vacancies, although 80 of those
vacancies/positions were recently added at the beginning of the 2015 Fiscal Year. There are 3 sworn
members of the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2014.
The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress since the July 24, 2014 City
Commission meeting:

Police Officer
•
Hired 92 Police Officers year-to-date (net gain of 59).
•
Hired 3 Police Officers since last City Commission meeting.
•
Two (2) Police Officer applicants awaiting medical clearance to hire.
•
Eighteen (18) applicants from the July 2014 orientation session undergoing
background investigation (expected to be hired by the end of October 2014 if
they pass all pre -employment hurdles).
•
Thirty-seven (37) applicants undergoing psychological and polygraph testing
(expected to be hired by December 2014, if they pass all pre -employment
hurdles).
Civilian Positions
•
Processing 38 Emergency Dispatch Assistant applicants to fill 5 vacancies
(undergoing polygraph examinations and expected to be hired by November
2014, if they pass all pre -employment hurdles).
•
Processing 4 Crime Scene Investigator applicants to fill 8 vacancies
(undergoing polygraph examinations and expected to be hired by October
2014, if they pass all pre -employment hurdles).
The table on page 2 is a snapshot of the Police Department's hiring progress and staffing levels from May
2013 through September 2014.
