Discussion Item, present an update on the Miami Streetcar project and the urgent need to move forward
with a premium transit option to provide mobility options within the City's Urban Core.
Background Information:
The City of Miami is undergoing a resurgence of high -density development, accentuating the need for a
premium fixed -guideway transit network. With a daytime population of over 220,000, Downtown Miami
is growing and congestion levels continue to increase. The resident population of Downtown is expected
to grow to 85,000 by year 2016, an increase of 16 percent from year 2011 and over 100 percent from year
2000. Although significant growth has been observed, no additional roadway capacity has been added to
the network.
The neighborhoods surrounding Downtown are experiencing a similar growth pattern as residents look for
a different lifestyle that allows them to live closer to their jobs. The areas of Overtown, Edgewater,
Midtown Miami, Miami Design District and Wynwood have already shown a new wave of developments
offering a choice to the residents, and the City of Miami supports the need for a premium fixed -guideway
transit network connecting the neighborhoods within the urbanized area.
