The pay was revealed in financial records for 2011 re- quested by The Palm Beach Post last year but not re- leased until 2014 by the non- profit hospice Its founding mission: to provide pallia- tive care for people withter- inal illnesses induding Mity Tucker said she was a secretary coordinat- ing care for patients at home whenshewas stunned tore- ceive a termination letter saying her last day would be Dec.19, 2011. In her own let- ter, Tucker pleaded with CEO Dave Fielding to help her understand why she was fired six days before Christ - "The termination hap- pened during one of the most difficult times of my life, a very challenging time frame where I was being treated for breast cancer," Tucker wrote. She said she could work only 30 hours a week after a leave for a double mastecto- my because she needed con- tinuing treatment, including chemotherapy. A termina- tion letter reminded her, "Failure to returnto full duty after completion of Family Medical Leave may result in termination of the em- ployee's employment." Tucker says sheneededto work only 30 hours a week to get treatment for her breast cancer. Hospice offrdals de- clined toconfirm or dispute Tucker's account, but the founder of the organization found 0 troubling. It is outrageous to treat your own employee like that," said Stella Monchick- W est, who founded Hospice of Palm Beach County in her own home in1978 and is now retired. "That's unconsdon- able. Hospice of Palm Beach County shows such com- passion to their patients and their families. Why wouldn't they show that compassion to their em- ployees?"o Fielding received more than$288,000 in bonuses, in- cluding an"incentive bonus" based on the organization's fi- nancial results, a $100,000 "retention bonus" and $65,000 in"deferral compen- sation' to boost his 200 pay, records show. His bonuses alone amounted to more than 10 times what Tucker said was her annual pay. A statement from Hospice of Palm Beach County said "Positive employee relations are the cornerstone of our or- ganization, and out ofrespect for the individual's privacy we cannot comment on specific case. Our commit- ment to Sir treatment for all employees is well known in the community." As for executive compen- sation, 'plans are deter- mined by third -party com- pensationconsultants on an annual basis, and adminis- tered by the compensation committee of our local board of directors," the statement said. "Executive compensation is set within standard industry guide- line A little more than two years after her firing,'Iuck- er, 48, said she is fighting to remain cancer -free but has been unable to get anew job in the meantime. She said she is doing the best she can on Medicaid and Social Se- curity benefits but cannot afford a breast reconstruc- tion procedure, for example. Tucker said she was born in Jamaica and moved to Palm Beach County in 1975. After losing her job, she said she was unable to afford the premiums under a program to extend her health insur- ance. Her children rallied to help her as best they could she said. She said she has two grown daughters, one recently named a teacher of the year at her elementary school, and a son who is an PUBLIC NOTICE ANY PERSON WHO RECEIVES COMPENSATION, REMUNERATION OR EXPENSES FOR CONDUCTING LOBBYING ACTIVITIES IS REQUIRED TO REGISTER AS A LOBBYIST WITH THE CITY CLERK PRIOR TO ENGAGING IN LOBBYING ACTIVITIES BEFORE CITY STAFF, BOARDS, COMMITTEES OR THE CITY COMMISSION. "That, most of all, was my biggest disappointment." In 2012, The Palm Beach Post reported the hospice let go of nearly 5 percent of its workforce, more than 30 em- ployees, around Memorial Day, even as executive pay was rising to average more than $300,000 apiece among the top 12 officers, according to the latest records then available. A hospice state- ment blamed in part a "chal- lenging anmmny,"though of- ficials said they later hired more than50 employees. Company officials ac- knowledged at the time that executive compensation in- cluded bonuses tied partly to the organization's "gross margin" — meaning money left after expenses — but de- nied that executives had in- centives to increase their peychecko by firingworkers. By Tucker's account, she received a good perfor- mance review before a dev- astating diagnosis of breast cancer in 20B, which forced to her take a leave while she underwent a double mas- tectomy. She never dreamed she would be fired because she could not work a full 40 hours a week on her return, she said. DEAR ABBY Involved mom sets the example Dear Abby: Ijust dropped off my H-yeaold son at a party. He's a seventh -grader, and when I take him to a friend's house, if I haven't met theparents, I walk him to the door and introduce him and myself to them. I do this to try and make sum the parents are at home and re ponsrble lknow Is em- barrasses him, but most par- ents thank me because they want to meet the parents of the kids who are in their homes. Times are dfJferent for our kids today. Ijust can't believe that someone would simply drop off a child and speed away when he/she has abso- lutely no clue who these peo- ple are. I'm not a helicopter parent: I'm just mother who lows my children enough to make sure they're in good hands. Recently,a ninth -grader in our school district had a house party where 30 kids re- ceived underage drinkirg ci- tations! Tell kids truth about Grandma Dear Carolyn: My mother died a few months ago. My chldren, whoare in their20s, adored her. They do not know she was abusive to me and my sisters when we were growing up. I don't really ant to disillusion them, but it is really hard to listen to them talk about how awe- some Grandma was. Is there anything neutral can say? — Remembering Grandma By neutral, you mean honest without upsetting anyone If so, that sounds like a vestige of your abusive childhood: Instead of living honestly, you're living with keen attention to the poten- tial cost of living honestly. That's a legacy no one deserves. If you were my parent, I would want you to tell me your truth. I would want you to say that you held this batik so I couldhavemy own relationship with Grandma, and explain that you did this without fully appreciating how much it would hurt you towatchthis plan suc - ceed. I would also hope you'd be patient if I react emo- xAic tionally, and trust me to come around to grat- itude for knowing. I'd also want you to be ready if tell you that Grandma also was abusive to me, but that I wasn't comfortable sharing this, until now. If you have grounds to be- lieve your kids won't receive the news this way, thenl sug- gest enlisting the help of a good, reputable family ther- apist. If there's any chance of fallout — if experience tells you that your kids don't han- dle gray areas well — then ex- piring your options with a trained guide is a reasonable in self -care, the value of which you apparently teamed the hard way.
