For calendar year 2013, the Miami Police Department hired 110 police officers. A total of 40 sworn officers separated from service during the same time period, thus representing a net gain of 70 officers for the year. The Police Department is currently operating with 70 sworn vacancies, although 35 of those vacancies are due to the positions added to the current fiscal year's budget. There are 15 sworn members and 48 civilian members of the Police Department who must separate from service due to the DROP in 2014. The Miami Police Department's sworn force is distributed as follows: 69% uniformed services/field operations, 19% criminal investigations, 10% administrative (including 5% who are assigned to background investigation and training duties in order to facilitate the agency's hiring efforts), and 2% community relations. The following is a breakdown of the Police Department's hiring progress: Position Status Certified Police Officer Processing 15 remaining applicants: • Hired two (2) Certified Police Officers since last Commission meeting. • Three (3) applicants pending medical clearance • Expected hire date in January 2014, if they pass all pre -employment hurdles.
