From: Castaneda, Frank Sent: Friday, May 03, 2013 10:58 AM To: Martinez, Johnny; Cabrera, Luis; Wheeler, Haydee; Regalado, Tomas (Mayor) Cc: 'Dr. Paul Ahr'; Casanova, Christina M.; Diaz, Placido; Duharte, Ralph; Gonzalez, Angel R; Gort, Wifredo (Commissioner) Subject: Camillus House [just had the most unbelievable conversation with Dr. Ahr. He is telling me that he has a number of vacant beds. I believe 30 and the City has told him that they just don't have any money to pay for them so he is talking to Miami Beach torrent those beds. So in effect we have people sleeping on the streets of Miami, we cannot get them out because we don't have beds because the beds that we have are being rented to Miami Beach or other Cities that are passing their homeless problem to us. The Homeless trust is asking for more beds because we have 300 homeless in Miami, but those beds at the end of the day end up serving all homeless in Dade County and might not even address our issue. Are we trying to solve the Homeless problem in Miami or are we being the vacuum cleaner to collect all the homeless in the nation. This is not smart policy. This is not best practices. Please review what we are doing it certainly doesn't make sense. We shouldn't be permitting any Cities or entities lease beds for non homeless issues in the City of Miami. They should build their own resources. That is not our job, and it is certainly not the responsibility of our residents to have to deal with these imported issues. Our residents have sacrificed enough. 1
