UNCLAIMED PROPERTY
Forgotten treasures going on auction block
• The state will hold two
auctions — in Tampa and
in Fort Lauderdale — to
sell off part of the $1
billion in unclaimed
property it has collected.

"If it fits in a safety-de-
posit box, we get it," said
Walter Graham, bureau
chief of the state's Un-
claimed Property Division
The treasures — and
memories — made their
way to the statecapitalfor a
variety of reasons: their
owners never made out a
will; addressees moved
without leaving a change of
address; safety-deposit
boxes were forgotten or
never mentioned to heirs.
And now they're about to
be sold off to the highest
bidder.
This summer, the state
will hold two auctions —in
Tampa inJune and Portlau-
derdale in August — to sell
off part ofthe $1 billininun-
caimed property that it has
collected from across Flori-
da Many items have sat on
the shelves for years; they're
being sold off because space
is needed for the new stuff
that comes in every day.
SUN EL
FOR SALE: The starting bid for this pocket watch is
$75. Below, a Krugerrand coin is valued at $1,550.
Auctions during the past
three years have brought in
$1 million to $1.2 million
Graham said most of
what the state holds is pa-
per dormant financial ac-
counts, mutual funds, in-
surance claims or utility de-
posits. But there's no short-
age of stuff: 144,000 items,
of which 76A00 will be put
up for bid in June.
Among the items listed:
two partial sets of sterling -
silver flatware with an ask-
ing price of $250, a 10-once
South African gold Kruger
rand with a minimum value
of $1,550 and a paper one -
sixth dollarfrom177G with
$45 price tag. The preset
value is more than
$550,000, but the state ex-
OH-
pects the sales prices to million.eed $1 Pompano Beach Mayor
Lamar Fisher's auction
company will oversee the
Tampa sale. The catalog
and value for the August
auction in Fort Lauderdale
are still being set
The unclaimed property
flows in because of state
law. Unclaimed insurance
payouts, as well as the con-
tents of safety-deposit box-
es if the bank has bad no
contact with the actual
owner or heirs for three
years, must be turned over
to the state. Much of it
comes from elderly people
who die without leaving
wills or without listing
heirs or next -of --kin.
"If there's an elderly per-
son living in South Florida,
their children or grandchii-
drenmay not know about it;"
said Anna Alexopoulos,
spokeswoman for Chief Pi-
nancialOff Jeff Atwater,
whose office oversees the
Division of Unclaimed
P.operty.
But not just dead people
leave unclaimed property.

Cuban hunger striker
begins tour in Miami
From Staff and Wire Reports
A frequent Cuban hunger
striker and dissident arrived
Sunday in Miami ahead of
Cuban Independence Day,
as part of a tour that will in-
clude several U.S. stops be-
fore going to Europe.
"I have come to the capital
of the Cuban exile," a smil-
ing Guillermo Farifias said
in Spanish. "We will show
that we nation"
He is scheduled to meet
with community leaders
and dissidents in Miami.
Until this year, if Farifias
had been granted permis-
sion to leave Cuba, he would
have forfeitedhs right to re-

turn. But in
January he
was told he
could leave
and return
after a new
law ended
the island's
exit visa re-
quirement.
On Monday, another Cu-

port Dr., Tampa.
Dates:The preview is

Other: The state has
secured a special hotel
rate of $109 at the Hyatt.
Reservations must be
made by Wednesday.
The Fort Lauderdale
auction is scheduled for
Aug. 23-24. Check back
later for details at
fltreasurehunt.org.
The state estimates that
one in four Floridians have
something — a refund
check returned because no
forwarding address was
left, or a check misdirected
to the wrong address or an
item left forgotten in a de-
posit box — in the un-
claimed -property vault.

often come up short. The

Claims canbe made online.
Graham said the state
makes an effort to fmd the
owner if it's a piece ofjewel-
ry or other personal item, as
opposed to unclaimed cash.
Owners or heirs have been
identified up to the day of
the auction, he said.
And if the item is sold,
the proceeds go into a trust
fund, so if an heir fords out
about the property later, he
or she can collect the cash.

RESCUED OFF KEYS: Bette Zirkelbach, manager of the
Turtle Hospital in Marathon, examines Charley.
Sea turtle expected
to make full recovery
Associated Press
A tagged juvenile logger-
head sea turtle that traveled
about 2,000 miles on ocean
currents was expected to
make a full recovery after
being rescued off the Flori-
da Keys, hospital officials
said Saturday.
Officials at theMamthon-
based Turtle Hospital said
the turtle named "Charley"
was eating squid and his di-
gestive system was active
"That's a step back to-
wards the ocean," hospital
manager Bette Zirkelbach
said. "We'll wait for blood
chemistry to come back.
He's alreadynotfloatingand
on the bottom of his tank. So
the prognosis is very good."
Charley had been nur-
tured from a hatchling as
partof a sea turtle headstart
program between Jorge Ta-
deo Lozano University in
Colombia andMundo Mari-
no Aquarium in Argentina.
He was justover seveninch-
es long and about two
pounds when he was re-
leased June 8 off Santa Mar-
ta, Colombia
Hospital officials said
Charley likely traveled
about 2,000 from his origi-
nal release point, riding var-
c
ents before
ending upin the Gulf
Stream.
A fisherman found him
floating in Sargasso weed on
Tuesday about 22 miles off
the Middle Keys, with a ball
of Gooseneck barnacles
trailing from him. Plastic
remnants were found in his
stool, which hospital offi-
cials said was the likely
c'use for his medical issues.
He has since been recov-
ering at the Turtle Hospital,
which has treated and re-
leased more than 1,000 sea
turtles since its founding in
1986, according to thehospi-
tal's website.
Charley is now 10 inches
long and weighs almost six
pounds. He will probably be
returned to the Gulf Stream
off the Florida Keys by early
June, hospital officials said.
