MEREDITH RUTLAND ' CAMPAIGN 2012 Cristina Saralegui endorses Obama • Endorsing a presidential candidate for the first time, the popular media figure said she'd work `to ensure that President Obama is reelected.' BY ERIKA BOLSTAD ebolstadOmccbrhydc.com WASHINGTON — Talk show host Cristina Sarale- guiannounced her endorse- ment of President Barack Obama, saying that there's too much at stake not to speak up when Hispanics could "very well decide the next election." It is the first presidential endorsement for the popu- lar Miami media figure, of- ten called the "Hispanic Oprah" for her two -decade run on Univisi6n. Obama for America released a vid- eo English and Spanish with a message from Sarale- gui to the Hispanic community. "Presi- dent Obama, I was very fortunate to live the SARALEOAa American dream and I know that only you will make it possible for millions more to do the same," she said in a statement provided by the campaign. "You've bad our back, and withunnostr pect and admiration, I have yours." She is "one of the most trusted names in the His- panic community and we're honored to have Cristina be a spokesperson for the cam- paign, speaking directly to Hispanic voters about the president's accomplish- ments," said campaign spokesman Jim Messina. Her nod comes at a time when both Obama and for- mer Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are seeking Hispanic voters. Both men will speak this week in Or- lando at the annual confer- ence of the National Associ- ation of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. Obama leads Romney 61 percent to 27 percent among Hispanics in a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll, but must shore up his support among Latino vot- ers to win in November. Romney doesn't need to outright win the Hispanic vote, but he does need to peel away enough of the cru- cial voting bloc to compete in swing states lice Florida, Nevada and Colorado. To that end, the Obama administration announced plans Friday to prevent the deportations of hundreds of thousands of undocument- ed immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally as children. That move is seen as an impor- tant signof respect for the wider Hispanic community. Saralegui, 64, said she be- lieves Obama "understands the HLspaniccormmtnity and has supported it uncondi- tionally" She said she will "do everything I can from now unnl November to ensure that President Obama is reelected." "President Obama is principled man who ... be- lieves that everyone who works hard and plays by the rules, should have afair shot at the American dream," she said. E1 Show de Cristina, launched on Univisi6n in 1989, was for years among Spanish -language TV's top shows. It was canceled in 2009 as ratings declined. She last year launched Pa- 'tante can Cristina on'Ihle- mundo, but she announced this month that it would not continue for another year. She has a weekly talk show cn her Sirius KM Radio hannel, Cristina Radio. HALLANDALE BEACH After two years, no sign of missing woman • The family of a woman who disappeared two years ago is heartbroken. BY JUAN ORTEGA Sun Sentinel Had Lynda Robin Meier not dis- appeared two years ago this month, the Miami Heat fan from Hallandale Beach likely would have been cheering on the team's appear- ance the NBA Finals. The basket- ball tourney has been one more reminder of her for family and friends. "Tmjustover- whelmed with grief," Meier's moth- er, Phylis Meier, said. "Everything reminds me of her. She was very to sports. I miss her. That's all I can say. My heart is in pain." Meier's unsolved vanishing re- mains under investigation as a case of foul play and a reward of up to $75,000 still is being offered for in- formationleading to one or more ar- rests, police said. Recent investigative efforts in- clude police divers searching a Mi- ami Gardens pond for evidence. "It's sell a critically important case for us," Hallandale Beach Po- lice Chief Dwayne Flournoy said. MEIER CRIME Family from Miami caught up in L.A. chase BURBANK, Calif. — A Miami family traveling in Southern California got caught up in a wild police chase involving a suspected drunk driver, police say. The DUI suspect led po- lice on a high-speed chase through the San Fernando Valley and ended about an hour later in Hollywood. According to CBS2 inLos Angeles, the car traveled ov- er 100 miles per hour at times. One of his tires blew out during the chase, which sent sparks from the hub cabs. Eventually, he side -swiped another vehicle being driv- en by Bryant Valencia from Miami, police say. Valencia told CBS2 that his 3-year-old son was hos- pitalized with back pains, but said his son will be OK "I saw this Mercedes coming right at me and I managed to swerve off a lit- tle bit and he bit me in the back," Valencia said. "We rolled over, I don't lmow how many times. My baby, my 3-year-old son and my wife, lucidly they are f and the car held up pretty good." The suspect was taken to custody after crashing in- to Valencia's car. While being cuffed the suspect was asked if he real- ized he hurt the people in the other car, he replied: "Do you realize I need help?" He also said he ran from police "because I wanted to go home and live good," re- ports say. WFOR-CBS 4 SW FOUND: The Cadillac Escalade that belonged to Lynda Meier, 40, was found in an Opa-locks parking after she vanished. "It's still critically important to her family. I desperately would like to off them some resolutionandcon- clusiontothelastdays of their loved one's life and what happened to Two convicted felons remain persons of interest inMeier's disap- pearance, Flournoy said. Authori- ties have pieced together some of the activities of Antwan Kennedy and his friend Dallas Wang onJune4, 2010, when Meier, then 40, was last se en, Flournoy said. Kennedy, 28, whose probation for aggravated assault ended this month, and King, 30, sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery, were interviewed by police, but nei- ther has been charged in Meier's case, police said. Minutes before she vanished, Meier talked by phone with K ne- dy, her friend of many years, making him the last person Meier spoke with, Flournoy said. Then she with- drew money from a bank ATM and drove her red 2007 Cadillac Esca- lade west on East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. A few hours after Meier went assing, King bought a cellphone at store in the Opa-locka area and used it to talk to Kennedy, Flournoy said. The purchase is significant, po- lice said because King had no in- come at the time. Stull, he had eough money to buy the phone. Whether King obtained any of Meier's money is unclear Police said King had obtained Meier's deb- it and credit cards. Two men were videotaped trying to me the cards the same day at bank ATMs in Miami -Dade County. Police said they think ring was one of them, but haven't said who the other might be "We have gotten some informa- tion to confirm our original beliefs, especially that we're adamant that Dallas King was using her credit card and trying to access her bank ount that morning, minutes after she was last seen," Flournoy said. This month, Hallandale Beach commissioners approved spending about $1,700 to treat a Miami Gar- dens pond with chemicals to im- prove its water clarity. It gave police divers the visibility they needed to search the pond for clues in Meier's case. Though Flournoy said the pond recently was searched, he declined to disclose whether anything was found. Two days after Meier was last seen, her 2007 Cadillac Escalade was found by an Opa-locka police officer in a parking lot near The Gardens apartments in the 13400 block of Northwest 30th Avenue. The Escalade was distinctive with its red exterior, shiny chrome rims and tinted windows. Hallandale Beach police ask any- one with information about Meier's disappearance to call 954-457-1400, or Broward Crime Stoppers, anony- mously, at 954-493-8477.
