Now in its 17thyear, Sum- mer Shorts has taken on more modest dimensions, though the pleasures of its short comedies and dramas remainplentifuL This year's lineup is a single programof nine plays, exclusively play- ing in the Carnival Studio Theater at Miami's Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. (Fort Lauderdale's BrowardCenter gets its own exclusive June 21-24 with Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays.) Just five hard-working actors do the artful heavy lifting, and under the guidance of direc- tors Margaret Ledford, MarkSwaner and JohnMan- zelli, all showcase their ve rsatility. Irene Adjan starts things off hoofing her way through Israel Horovitz's The Audi- tion Play, justifiably won - THREE'S A CROWD: Irene Adjan is an understanding girlfriend to Stephen Trovillion, a still -connected widower in '3' at the Summer Shorts Festival. dering why her potential di- rector (Todd Allen Durkin) is so fixated on her accent when, in fact, she's trying out for anon-speaking,non- Equity chorusjobthatisalso no n-paying. ThenDurkinreappears as a bewigged John Adams in Adam Peltzman's Bedfel- lows. Inspired by a reel night in 1776 when Adams and Benjamin Franklin were forcedto share aroom and a bed in a crowded New Jer- sey inn, Bedfellawsbecomes the comedic study of squab bling opposites. The fussy, proper Adams is constantly annoyed by the inventive, free -spirited , self -admiring Franklin (Stephen Tkovil- lion). Those founding -fa- ther bedfellows are strange - but very, very f y. Lojo Simon's Moscow pairs Katherine Wright as Jen, afeminiist academic and fairly new mom, with Eliza- beth Dimon as Ruth, her kvetching Jewish mother from Florida. The two have climbed hilly Idaho terrain for a made-up, babycon- PHOTOS BY sowYgrxnao REDEYE FOUNDING FATHERS: Stephen Troy ill non appears again as an inventive Benjamin Franklin with Todd Allen Durkin as a fussy John Adams in 'Bedfellows.' nected ritual that Jen hopes will become a special bond, though Ruth remains fo- cused on just how far Idaho is from Florida. Moscow is minor and a little silly, but there's a tenderness at its core. Christopher Demos - Brown's The Man From Mars is snout -there comedy about a nerdy guy (Trovil- lion) whose special gift is the ability to bestow instant sexual pleasure on anyone through a fund little ges PUBLIC NOTICE ANY PERSON WHO RECEIVES COMPENSATION, REMUNERATION OR EXPENSES FOR CONDUCTING LOBBYING ACTIVITIES IS REQUIRED TO REGISTER AS A LOBBYIST WRH THE CITY CLERK PRIOR TO ENGAGING IN LOBBYING ACTIVRIES BEFORE CITY STAFF, BOARDS, COMMITTEES OR THE CITY COMMISSION. Hearing Boards Ad No. 18069 ture. Written for the most recent 24-Hour Theatre Project, the play seemed hi- larious there; at the Arsht, not so much. The Britneys brings to- gether three gals in a book club, one of those 'literary" gatherings in which gossip and alcohol always seem to win out over meaningful analysis of that month's se- lection. Dimon sh ines in this one as a micromanaging emotional wreck Arguably the sweetest play is Gregory Bonsig- nore's 3, apiece about awid- ower (T'ovillion) who brings the new woman inhis life (Adjan)tooneofhisreg- ular visits to his late voile's grave site. The guy is still deeply connected to the woman he loved, in a way that might make most wom- engive up. But it quicklybe- s clear that he's lucky to have found someone as understanding as his girlfriend. Joyce 'Duiskylie's I11 Be There pairs a successful, well -prepared stalker (TM- vilhon) and a woman with whom he had a single date (Dimon). It's an odd comedy made artful through the in- nocce openness the actors bring to their roles. Both actors areterrific,f yand angst -ridden, as they com- municate the frustrations and hopes of a loving couple wanting to become parents. The festival wraps up with Reality Play, directed and written by Swaner, in which Durkinreels off some of the key conventions ofre- ality TV (physical humilia- tion, booze, eating bad stuff, emotional humiliation, in- appropriate fits of anger, a makeover) and proceeds to act out eachone, with anas- sist from Wright Mostly be- cause Durkin is such a no - holds -barred actor, the play works, though occasionally in a stomach -turning way. The good news about Summer Shorts 2012 is that there's not a true dud in the bunch. And though the"fes- tival" vibe isn't terribly evi- dent, the art is just fie.
