BY ZEINA KARAM Associated Ness BEIRUT — In dozens of tanks and armored vehicles Syrian troops stormed re- bellious areas near the cap- ital Sunday, shelling neigh- borhoods that have fallen under the control of army dissidents and clashing with fighters. hters. At least 62 people f killed in violence na- tionwide, activists and resi- dents said. The wide -scale offensive near the capital suggested the regime is worried that military defectors could close in on Damascus, which has remained rela- tively quiet while most oth- er Syrian cities descended into chaos after the uprising began in March. The rising bloodshed added urgency to Arab and Western diplomatic efforts toendthel0-month conflict The violence has gradual- ly approached the capital. In the past two weeks, army dissidents have become more visible, seizing several suburbs on the eastern edge of Damascus and setting up checkpoints where masked men wearing military attire NYMOUSAP IN THE STREETS: This image from an amateur video taken on Sunday purportedly shows a funeral taking place in Damascus. and wielding assault rifles stop motorists and protect anti -regime protests. Their presence so close to the capital is astonishing in tightly controlled Syria and suggests the Assad re - me may either be losing control or setting up a trap for the fighters before going on the offensive. Residents of Damascus reported hearing clashes in the nearby suburbs, particu- larly at night, shattering the city's calm. "The current battles tak- ing place in and around Da- mascus may not yet lead to the unraveling of theregime, but the illusion of normalcy that the Assads have sought hard to maintain in the cap- ital since the beginning of the revolution has surely un- raveled," said Ammar Abd- ulhamid, aU.S.-based Syrian dissident "Once illusions unravel, reality soon follows," he wrote in his blog Sunday. Soldiers riding some 50 tanks and dozens of ar- mored vehicles stormed suburbs and villages on the eastern outskirts of Damas cus known as al-Ghouta, a predominantly Sunni Mus- lim agricultural area where large anti -regime protests have been held. Some of the fighting on Sunday was less than three miles from Damascu s, in Ein Tarma, making it the closest yet to the capital "There are heavy clashes going on in all of the Damas- U.S: PAKISTAN RELATIONS Panetta: Pakistan holds doctor tied to raid • The U.S. defense secretary confirmed to CBS that a Pakistani doctor, being held by Pakistan, helped the CIA before the Osama bin Laden raid. McClatchy News Service LAHORE, Pakistan — A senior American official has for the first time admitted that a Pakistani doctor played a key role in tracking Osama bin Laden to his hideout in northern Paki- stan, and called for his release. The comments by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Pa- netta were the lust public confirmation of apart of the bin Laden operation report- ed by McClatchy Newspa- pers last July, about how the CIA used Shakil Afridi to try to establish whether the al- Qaida leader was really liv- ing in a large house in Ab- bottabad, northern Pakistan. Afridi has been in Paldsta- ni custody since the coun- try's own spy agency, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), learned of the secret task performed by the doctor, who set up a fake vaccina- tion program in Abbottabad to get DNA samples from those at the compound. The CIA was never cer- tain that bin Laden was pre- sent in the house. Afridi workedfor the American in- telligence agency in the weeks leading up to the May 2 U.S. Navy Seals raid, set- ting up an elaborate scheme that was supposedly going house to house to vaccinate residents in Abbottabad. Panetta, in an interview that was to be broadcast on CBS's 60 Minutes Sunday night, also voiced his belief that elements within Paki- stan must have known that bin Laden, or at least some- one significant was inside the compound. "I am very concerned about what the Pakistanis did with this indi- vidual [Afridi]. This was an individual who, in fact, helped provide intelligence that was very helpful with regard to this operation," Pa- netta said, according to a CBS release. The McClatchy investiga- tion discovered that Afridi was arrested by the ISI in late May and was tortured. It is believed that he remains in the custody of the intelli- genre agency, part of the military, but that he has not been charged with a crime. The fate of the doctor has become another source of tension between Islamabad and Washington, with American officials pressing Pakistan to free him so he and his family can be reset- tled in the United States. The Pakistani commis- sion investigating bin Lad- en's presence in the country last year recommended that Afridi be tried for treason. The military, which will de- cide what happens to Afridi, was furious that the CIA redcruited Pakistani citi- zens for clandestine opera- tions inside the country. Pri- vately, officials point out that it is a crime to work for a foreign intelligence agency.
