HomeMy WebLinkAboutSummary FormAGENDA ITEM SUMMARY FORM FILE ID: /l — /4 2 / Date: 9/4 2011 Requesting Department: Police Commission Meeting Date: / 2.//T/ I I District Impacted: All Type: ® Resolution n Ordinance n Emergency Ordinance Discussion Item n Other Law Department Matter ID No. Subject: A Resolution accepting a grant from Miami -Dade County Office of Grants Coordination for the School Resource Officer (SRO) Project Purpose of Item: It is recommended that the Miami City Commission adopt the attached Resolution to establish a new Special Revenue Project entitled: "School Resource Officer Project" consisting of a grant from the Miami -Dade County Office of Grants Coordination, in the amount of $20,941; authorizing the City Manager to enter into an agreement, with Miami -Dade County, to accept said grant award and to execute the necessary documents, in substantially the attached form, to implement the acceptance and administration of said grant. Background Information: This funding will allow the Miami Police Department to increase the level of services provided to our community. Specifically, the department will use School Resource Officers to identify and deter truancy amongst the student population. Truancy efforts will be directed to middle and high school age youth. The School Resource Officers will increase the number of truancy sweeps during the school year; they will provide crime prevention educational classes to all targeted schools; and will require all truants to participate in monthly diversionary activities, as well as anti -crime prevention sessions together with their parents. The police department will continue its efforts in the Resisting Aggression Defensively Program (RADKids) in targeted schools within the City.
