Re: Use of Virginia Key Landfill for Storage of Port of Miami Tunnel Spoil Material in
Anticipation of Landfill Closure
Dear Ms. Bravo:
Per our telephone conversation of June 28, 2011, the Department of Solid Waste Management
(DSWM) supports the use of the Virginia Key Landfill (Landfill) for storage of Port of Miami
Tunnel spoil material in anticipation of its use in the Landfill closure project. From staff notes of
the May 24, 2011 meeting between the City of Miami (City) and the County, which you and
your consultant attended, it is my understanding that a geotechnical analysis of the Landfill
must be completed and approved by the County's Department of Environmental Resources
Management (DERM) prior to placement of tunnel or dredging spoil material on the Landfill.
Please be reminded that a grant to the City to pay for closure of the Landfill is contingent upon
the City extending its long term waste,.disposal interlocal agreement with Miami -Dade County.
If you have any questions concerning this letter, please contact me at 305-514-6628.
Sincerely,
v
