HomeMy WebLinkAboutMemo - Mad Science South Florida, Inc.CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: Tony E, Crapp, Jr. City Manager Lillian Blonde, Interim Director Office of Grants Admin istr•. t' n A DATE: SUBJECT: i REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: June 9, 2011 FILE Authorizing an Agreement with Mad Science South Florida, Inc_ City of Miami Commission Meeting of July,l4°i, 2011 The Office of Grants Administration respectfully requests you approval and action of the City of Miami Commission by a 4/5ths affirmative vote, after an advertized public hearing ratifying, approving and confirming the City Manager's recommendation, and fording that competitive negotiation methods are not practicable of advantageous regarding the agreement for the educational services described below. The Department respectfully requests such recommendation, finding, and authorization in order to proceed with executing an agreement with Mad Science South Florida, Inc., to award funds, in the amount of $27,000.00 to operate the Science component at Holmes Elementary School as part of the Miami Learning Zone Out -of -School Program funded by the Children's Trust, for the 2011-2012 school year. During the previous year, Mad Science South Florida, Inc. has demonstrated its qualifications and capacity to serve the city through the following: 1. Providing a Science curriculum that incorporates the Miami -Dade County Public School, State of Florida Sunshine State Standards. 2. Providing curriculum management that includes designing, monitoring, and implementing a quality after -school Science program 3. Providing written, visual and hands-on instruction at designated site. 4. Coordinating four hours of weekly instruction at the designated site. 5. Providing a Science teacher at the site to teach thematic classes designed to help the students practice their communication skills, improve their visual literacy as well as develop their cognitive and physical functioning. For the reasons stated above, as required by the Section 18-85(A) of the Code of the City of Miami, the Office of Grants Administration (1) recommends the execution of an agreement with Mad Science South Florida, Inc., for the 2011-2012 contract year be awarded to Mad Science South Florida, Inc., which is qualified and has been providing said services described above for many years, and (2) finds that the competitive negotiated methods ..are not practicable or advantageous. for , the provision of the . aforementioned literacy services at Holmes Elementary School. If these recommendations and findings meet with your approval, please indicate by signing below. The Legislation item will be placed on the agenda for the July 14ffi, 2011 City Commission Meeting.
