HomeMy WebLinkAboutLegislationCity of Miami Legislation Resolution City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 11-00474 Final Action Date: A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S), APPROVING THREE (3) COLLEGE LEVEL EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS, IN THE AMOUNT OF $3,000 PER SCHOLARSHIP, FOR THE FOLLOWING ELIGIBLE STUDENTS: ZSANAI A. MCKNIGHT, GINA MARTIN AND ANQUAN MCBRIDE; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER OR DESIGNEE TO DISBURSE THE SCHOLARSHIPS, UPON DISCRETION, WITH THE PRESENTATION OF SATISFACTORY DOCUMENTATION FROM THE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AS STATED HEREIN; FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE EXECUTION OF ALL DOCUMENTS NECESSARY FOR SAID PURPOSE, IN A FORM ACCEPTABLE TO CITY MANAGER OR DESIGNEE AND CITY ATTORNEY; ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM THE OPERATING FUND ENTITLED, "OTHER CONTRACTUAL SERVICES," ACCOUNT CODE NO. 13000.212000.534000.0000.00000. WHEREAS, pursuant to Ordinance No. 10654, adopted October 12, 1989, the City Commission established an educational trust fund as codified in Section 22-15, of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, entitled "Educational trust fund established from recycling program for scholarships to children of certain city employees, conditions for implementation "; and WHEREAS, pursuant to this educational trust fund having been established from certain moneys received by the City of Miami ("City") from the recycling program upon the accumulation of interest from the recycling program funds, as prescribed by Section 22-15, a scholarship award may be made for an amount that does not exceed $3,000 annually, to eligible, qualified employees of the City Department of Solid Waste, or the children or legal dependents of these employees, based upon a recommendation from the Director of Solid Waste, which is based on the applicable criteria in the ordinance or documents promulgated under it; and WHEREAS, Zsanai A. McKnight, Gina Martin and Anquan McBride are recommended by the Director of Solid Waste, and by the Recycling Educational Scholarship Committee, as eligible recipients of these scholarship funds; and WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to approve the sum of $3,000 for each of the three (3) eligible students named in this resolution in accordance with its terms, and the allocation of this expenditure to be made by September 30, 2011; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Three (3) college level educational scholarships, in the amount of $3,000 per scholarship, are approved, as the. amount for the current Solid Waste Recycling Program Scholarship City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File Id: 11-00474 (Version: 1) Printed On: 5/25/2011 File Number. 11-00474 for the Fall 2011 Semester, for each of the following students at the following institutions: A. Zsanai A. McKnight, $3000, Howard University B. Gina Martin, $3000, Florida International University; C. Anquan McBride, $3000, Florida International University; Section 3. The recommendation of the Director of Solid Waste and the work of the Solid Waste Recycling Educational Committee, is acknowledged. Section 4. The City Manager or designee is authorized{1} to disburse each of these three (3) scholarships, upon discretion, with the presentation of satisfactory documentation from the educational institutions stated herein. Section 5. The City Manager or designee is authorized{1} to execute all documents necessary for said purpose, in a form acceptable to the City Manager or designee, and the City Attorney. Section 6. Funds for said scholarships are to be allocated from the Operating Fund entitled, "Other Contractual Services", Account Code No. 13000.212000.534000.0000.00000. Section 7. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{2} APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: JULIE O. BRU CITY ATTORNEY Footnotes: {1} The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by the City Attorney, including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and Code provisions. {2} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
