Pacheco told el Nuevo Herald that she is in- nocent in an interview Tuesday. "1 respect his [Dosen- tii 1 decision, but I have the confidence that 1 will be able to occupy this position again," she said. "1 know my in- nocence is going to be proven." Ina statement re- leased Tuesday, Mayor Esteban "Steve" Bovo Jr. reiterated his disap- pointment in Pacheco's actions and said he hopes to "put this dark chapter for the city be- hind us." Hialeah's charter specifies that a perma- nent vacancy resulting from death, resignation, recall, court order, or other lawful action shall be filled by appoint- ment, by resolution, by an affirmative vote of at least four council mem- bers within 30 days of the vacancy. The suspension was handed down just hours before the last sched- uled City Council meet- ing before the summer break at Hialeah City Hall, prompting politi- cians to quickly consider appointing someone to fill her vacancy. Jesus Tundidor, the council president, told the Herald that the sit- uation marks a very sad moment for Hialeah. "It always hurts when we see the city filled with this kind of news, a reputation from which we have tried very hard to free ourselves," he said. Tundidornoted that Tuesday night's council meeting will include e discussion on this matter to coordinate a special session to address the vacancy left by Pache- co's removal. Theday after the councilwoman surren- dered to the FBI, Bovo held a press conference where he said he expect- ed the City Council to appoint someone to replace her. "The council has had the ability to appoint a person that usually holds the position until the next election because a special election in the city costs half a million dollars," the mayor said, ruling out the possibility to conduct an special election in November for her vacancy. "My advice to the councilors would be ... 1 don't think it is even feasible at this time to be able to conduct an election to try to have it in November," Bovo said. On Friday, Roberto A. Rodriguez, deputy su- pervisor of the Miami - Dade County Elections Department, told the Herald "there is still time for Hialeah to con- duct an election this year for any vacant seat." Rodriguez said be- cause this year is a presi- dential election year, if Hialeah decides to con- duct an election for Pacheco's seat in No- vember, it would cost about $44,000, not the $415,000 that the city paid in 2023 for an elec- tion for four council seats. With Pacheco's sus- pension, Hialeah will have two open seats by the end of the year fol- lowing Bryan Calvo's resignation in Novem- ber. Calvo has to resign because he is running for tax collector. A couple of weeks before Pacheco's in- dictment, she and her colleague Calvo debated about his soon -to -be - vacant seat in City Council meeting. Hialeah attorney Ra- fael Suirez-Rivas ex- pleined to the council that the city is governed by state statutes, which stipulate that "the resig- nation Is effective when indicated in the letter, and in this case, it is November 1st." Despite downpour, Panthers fans revel in championship glory UnGarntet AGORA ppilaaaww.Wersid. Gabby Kiger has pa- tiently waited for the Florida Panthers to clinch the NHL's top honor since attending her first game at AP 9- Now, decades later, 34-year-old Kiger made sure she was among the ow +wpm^ thousands celebrating the Panthers Stanley Cup win on Sunday along ALA in Fort Lauderdale. She even coordinated an outfit for the occasion. When the Panthers were up 3.0 in the finals, Kiger ordered a silver dress from Armen. She wore it at the parade, with her body also covered in glitter. Kiger also had a silver mixing bowl on her head, which glistened with every move. Her way of ringing in victory? Donning a Stan- ley Cup -inspired costume. "The process was dec- ades of planning and preparation and dreaming and fantasizing about this moment_" she said. "It just feels like everything we've ever wanted com- ing to fruition." Fans, Uke Kiger, were packed behind stretches of guardrails, some sticking to their spots even amid a downpour of rain. The jovial atmosphere wasn't dampened by the weather, however. Panthers fanatics, in their jerseys, blowed horns and shouted "Let's Go Panthers" throughout the parade. A few even hoisted replicas of the Stalky Cup. Police officers — in vehicles, got carts and on bikes — lined every comer of the beach. Hundreds of first responders from several local and federal agencies were stationed at the parade, a Fort Lauder- dale police spokesperson said. Asa child, Kiger and her (amity made the two hour drive from Vero Beach to attend Panthers games in Broward. She now lives in Sunrise — and headed to the Amerant Bank Arena last Monday for Game 7. "I honestly can't even put it into words. When the clock hit tero on Monday night, I was sobbing," Kiger said. "The three weeks of the final series were the most stressful n my life. 1 barely ate. I bare- ly slept" B01 Peters, 42, and more than 20 other members of the Lauderdale Yacht Club congregated in the crowd- ed Hooters overlooking the parade. Some poked their head out the windows while others stood on chairs. They shouted in unison when Matthew Tkachuk appeared in the parade's procession. Peters, who attended almost every home game this mason, witnessed the Panther' historic win in person. But for him, the Panther clinching the Stanley Cup was more than a triumph. Peter his been a Pan- thers fan since he moved to Broward in 2006. He said the victory is cause for cele- bration for all of South Flor- ida, which hasn't had a pro team win a title since the Miami Heat took home the NBA championship in 2013. "Game 7 almost gave me a heart attack," he 9utpped- Randall HUI, 40, drove from North Lauderdale and arrived to the beach at 7 a.m. to secure a spot to greet the Stanley Cup. Dressed in Panthers gear, he said he has been a fan of all South Florida sports teams, including the Heat and the Miami Dolphins, since he started watching sports as a child. "Tkachuk gong into the water?" HU1 said. 'That was the grand finale." It all fades to tiny -type foot- notes because history notes who won, not how, and history's reward is the same as Game 7's: Winner -take -ail, and for all time. Winning payers all get their time with the Stanley Cup, starting when it got passed around to hold and lift on the ice after Game 7, "It didn't feel real," center Sam Bennett said of that. "It was the coolest mo ment of my life." Every player will get his day with the Cup, too, and some of the plans are emotional and sweet, like the promise Bennett and his father Dave made to each other more than 20 years ago. "Me and my Dad, ever since 1 can remember, we've always said the first thing we would eat is Cap'n Crunch out of the Stanley Cup," he said. "I have to hold trite to my 6-year-old self. I'm pretty excited to do that." LONG TIME COMING The captain and career - long Panther, Saticoy, was drafted by Florida on June 30,2013— 11 years to the day before the champion- ship parade. He has since become the best player and quiet cornerstone of the club even as Matthew Tkachuk and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky have their tams as fan favorite. The night of Game 7 Barkov was a minute or so into an on -ice interview with a throng of reporters the night of the biggest win of his life, when someone too small to be seen behind him reached up to touch his shoulder. Barkov, nib on skates and in full uniform, turned to see his mother Olga. Their hug was a long embrace 1 wished had gone on forever. During it, not a word was spoken. 1 felt my eyes glistening. GETTING EVERYONE INVOLVED The night all of their lives changed, before the on -ice ceremonies, Pan- thers players and coaches streamed into their locker room fora private team celebration. Two city of Sunrise firefighter -paramedics, always on assignment to be near the team in case of emergency, were out- side the closed door. They heard the muffled cele- bration inside. Suddenly the door opened. "What are you guys doing out here!?" a voice said. The paramedics stam- mered, thinking they were being scolded for being too close. "Get in here!" boomed the voice as they were welcomed into the rau- cous room. Soon after, on the Ice, a fan with a cup of beer was lifted high enough to lean over the top of the Plex- iglas and pour. Below, mouth agape, Panthers forward Ryan Lomberg was catching as much as he could through wide grin as the fans roared approval. EATING HIS WORDS When the Panthers hired Maurice as coach in lune 2022 a local col- umnist wrote about the decision under the head- line: Paul Maurice!? Florida Panthers reap coach of year finalist for guy No. 1 in career fosses 1 have not been invited to head up the Welcome Wagon for anybody since. The headline was not inaccurate. Florida gener- al manager Bill Zito opted to not retain interim coach Andrew Brunette after he'd led the Cats to the Presidents Trophy with the NFL's ben re- cord and highest -scoring Panthers center Carter Verhaeghe carries the Stanley Cup through the crowd during the victory parade at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Park on Sunday. team, though the season ended abruptly with a second -round playoff sweep by rival Tampa Bay. Brunette was a top - coach finalist who'd never been a head coach when elevated early that season after champion -pedigreed Joel Quennevdle abruptly was forced to resign over a 10-year-old scandal from when he'd been head coach in Chicago. Zito passed over Bm- nene to hire, in Maurice, n who ranked No. 1 in most career coaching losses and had never won it all, losing in his only Stanley Cup Final in 2002 with Carolina. 1 wrote it was • "a du- bious decision until the new guy proves it was the right one." The "new guy" proved it was, if you will pardon the understatement. Maurice stepped in boldly, completely re- vamping the way the Pan- thers would play and the identity they would have. The exciting, offense - minded Cats would be- e a defense -fast team with • style designed to be "playoff hockey." 1t was the most dramat- ic stylistic change by any coach this market had seen since the Dolphins' Don Shola, who had won Super Bowls with Larry Csonka and brute -force, CITY OF MIAMI. Maurice's new -look Cats, regaling in the trade that brought Tkachuk in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, reached the club's fuss Stanley Cup Final since 1996 in his first before losing. One year later: Sun- day's championship cele- bration. Maurice still has the most career losses, by the way. But now nobody will ever e about that again, because a single Stanley Cup trophy held aloft is greater than all else. Earlyin the Final series Maurice with surprising candor had admitted, "1 need one. I gone win a Stanley Cup" after almost 30 years behind an NHL hockey bench trying. " RARE COMPANY Appreciation For win- ning a major sports cham- pionship is such that cities literally throw a parade — because winning them is hard. The occasional true dynasty in sports is the anomaly, the rarity. South Florida's professional sports history mirrors the difficulty: •Miami Dolphins: Two championships (1972, '73) in 58 seasons — The fran- chise was six years old when they it won back to back Super Bowls inebsd- ing a Perfect Season as Shula's arrival proved magical. But Shwa would never be champion again and even the great Marino fell short. The Fins' record in Super Bowls is 2-3, the last shot at it in 1984, and it has now been 50 years and counting — a half century — since the Dol- phins last won it all. • Miami Marlins: Two championships (1997, 2003) in 32 seasons — The then -Florida Marlins won the World Series in only their fifth season and repeated six years later, but that early franchise momentum braked and spun into reverse. The Fish have not come close to the top in the 21 sea- sons since, gradually fall- ing out of relevance in MLB and in their own home market, thanks largely to chronic, contin- uing under -spending by ownership. •Miami Heat: Three championships (2006, 2012, '13) in 36 seasons — 1t took 18 years (and drafting Dwyane Wade) for the Heat to finally win an NBA title. LeBron James and Chris Bosh joining Wade brought two more trophies, but the Big 3 era ended too soon, in four seasons, and so have the championships. The Heat's record in NBA Finals is 3-4, the title drought enters its llth season, and now East rival Boston reigns as new champion • Florida Panthers: One championship (2024) in 30 seasons — Cats fans paid their dues and saw thew patience Finally re- warded, after earlier Stan- ley Cup Final losses in 1996 and 2023 and about two decades of not win- ning a whole to in be- tween- The team seems well -positioned to contin- ue strong and compete for more rings. But this is sports. Shwa thought that, too, in 1973. •Inter Miami: Zero championships in four years entering the ongo- ing 2024 season — That "never could change as the arrival of global superstar Lionel Messi last summer helped rum this team from a Major League Soccer also-ran to a league power currently atop the MIS East stand- ings. But this i5 sports. Not even Messi comes with a guarantee. Combined, our current Big Five pro teams have won eight championships across 160 seasons, an average of exactly one every 20 years. If you want to include the market's biggest col- lege team, Miami Hsrri- canes football has won five national champion- ships in 87 seasons, though none since ever - distant 2001. So add Canes football alongside our pro team history and that's D championships in 247 combined seasons. Pro or college, no mat- ter the sport, being better than everybody else is hard. That's why, when it happens, we forget our divisions for a minute and feel like a community again and throw a parade. We cherish the memo- ries, and try to always remember the feeling. We treat it like a family heir- loom. We even show up in the rain, lightning and thunder all around, and we love every minute of it. Because, as the rain is falling like confetti, we know we might never see this again. Anton Lun- dell, Aaron Ekblad and Roberto Lungo banged the drum. "You've got to go off the hook for these guys," Pan- thers owner Vincent Viola said "How crazy are you going to get?" Jordan McPherson 305-376.2129, @J McPherson1126 Despite downpour, Panthers fans revel in championship glory BY GMETNEL Acau a+auil+ca.,„.w...se e., Gabby Kiger has pa- tiendy waded for the Florida Panthers to clinch the NHL's top honor since attending her first game at age 9. Now, decades later, 34-year-old Kiger made sure she was among the thousands celebrating the Panthers' Stanley Cup win on Sunday along ALA in Fort Lauderdale. She even coordinated an outfit for the occasion. When the Panthers were up 3.0 in the finals, Kiger ordered a silver dress from Amazon. She wore it at the parade, with her body also covered in glider. Kiger also had a silver mixing bowl on her head, which glistened with every move. Her way of ringing in victory? Donning a Stan- ley Cup -inspired costume. "The process was dec- ades of planning and preparation and dreaming and fantasizing about this moment..." she said. "It just feels like everything we've ever anted com- ing to fruition." Fans, like Kiger, were packed behind stretches of guardrails, some sticking to their spots even amid a downpour of rain. The jovial atmosphere wasn't dampened by the weather, however. Panthers fanatics, in their jerseys, Mowed horns and showed "Let's Go Panthers" drougtl0ut the parade. A few even hoisted replicas of the Stanley Cup. Police officers — in vehicles, golf carts and on bikes — lined every caner of the beach. Hundreds of first responders from several local and federal agencies were stationed at the parade, a Fort Lauder- dale police spokesperson said. As a child, Kiger and her family made the two hour drive from Vero Beach to attend Panthers games in Broward. She now lives in Sunrise — and headed to the Amerant Bank Arena last Monday for Game 7. "1 honestly can't even put it into words. When the clock hit zero on Monday night, 1 was sobbing," Kiger said. "The three weeks of the final series were the most stressful in my life. 1 barely ate. I bare- ly slept." Bill Peters, 42, and more than 20 other members of the Lauderdale Yacht Club congregated in the crowd- ed Hooters overlooking the parade. Some poked their head out the windows while others stood on chairs. They shouted in unison when Matthew Tka ohuk appeared in the parade's procession. Peters, who attended almost every home game this season, wimessed the Panthers' historic win in person. But for him, the Panthers clinching the Stanley Cup was more than a triumph. Peters has been a Pan- thers fan since he moved to Broward in 2006. He said the victory is cause for cele- bration for ad of South Flor- ida, which hasn't had a pro team win a tide since the Miami Heat took home the NBA championship in 2013. "Game 7 almost gave me a heart attack," he quipped. Randall Hill, 40, drove from North Lauderdale and arrived to the beach at 7 a.m. to secure a spot to greet the Stanley Cup. Dressed in Panthers gear, he said he has been a fan of all South Florida sports teams, including the Heat and the Miami Dolphins, since he started watching sports as a child. "Tkac huk going into the water?" Hill said. "That was the grand finale."
