R-224-11 RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING NW 2ND AVENUE FROM NW 30TH STREET TO NW 36TH STREET AS "DOROTHY QUINTANA AVENUE", URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO JOIN IN SUCH CODESIGNATION WHEREAS, Dorothy "Dottie" Quintana was born in 1909 in Ponce, Puerto Rico; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Quintana married Efrain Quintana in 1948, and moved to Miami in 1950; and WHEREAS, in 1957, she moved to a house in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, where she lived until her recent death on March 14, 2011 at the age of 101; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Quintana dedicated more than 50 years to improving life for the residents of Wynwood, fighting crime and drugs, helping residents secure social services, feeding the hungry, helping the sick and assisting senior citizens; and WHEREAS, over the years, Mrs. Quintana opened her home to Cuban refugees and to Haitian migrants; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Quirtana served as a community activist up to her last days; and WHEREAS, Dorothy Quintana had received many awards and recognition for her service, in April 2002, for example, the City of Miami remodeled the community center Located in Roberto Clemente Park located at 101 N.W. 34th Street in Miami, and named it the "Dorothy Quintana Center"; and WHEREAS, NW 2nd Avenue from NW 30th Street to NW 36th Street is a County road located within the City of Miami that borders Roberto Clemente Park; and Agenda Item No. 5 (E) Page No. 3 The Chairperson thereupon declared the resolution duly passed and adopted this 4th day of April, 2011. This resolution shall become effective ten (10) days after the date of its adoption unless vetoed by the Mayor, and if vetoed, shall become effective only upon an override by this Board.
