The Shops of Overtown LLC
GRANT PROPOSAL
I am a young African -American entrepreneur, mother of two, and a resident of
Overtown and it my sincere hope that your grant committee and board of
directors will consider and accept my grant request for $ 92,000.
I am seeking assistance from the Overtown Community Redevelopment Agency
for a Creative Retail Store that specialize in school uniforms and other fashion
favorites in the Overtown Shopping Center. The capital I am requesting will be
used for the build -out cost, equipment, licensing, insurance, fixtures, and other
related start-up costs.
I am a college graduate and well known throughout the CRA redevelopment
area. I have been a homeowner in the Overtown Area since 2006, residing in the
St. John Village Townhouses. I have the desire to succeed, the knowledge of
business and excellent references from customers and neighbors in the
Overtown community.
I established my first company, Kicks on Wheels, in 2007 which was located at
175 NW 14th Street. Kick's on Wheel's was a men's shoe and clothing store.
Customers appreciated the range of merchandise from the basics of Nike to
other hip styles that were in. As the store prospered successfully, I saw a
potential for growth. Therefore, in 2010 I invested and partnered with another
up -and coming entrepreneur to launch a Barber Shop in Overtown.
Overtown has great need for a Creative Retail Store that specialize in School
Uniforms, which research shows would be a smart business addition to this
community. According to the American Fact Survey in 2013 provided by the US
Census, there were just fewer than 2,500 kids in Overtown. According to
members of the Overtown Children and Youth Coalition that number will
doubled.
On March 12th, 2015 the Miami Herald released an article which stated "a House
panel on Thursday approved a bill that would encourage school districts to
adopt a standard attire policy for students in grades K-8" in the State of Florida.
Currently, "all but two of Miami-Dade's 340 schools have some kind of school

uniform program, school system administrator Sally Alayon told lawmakers
earlier this year." See attached article.
The store will be located within walking distance to the many residents in the
Overtown area. I believe that this accessibility is critical to the success and
long-term growth of the store.
There is a high demand for school uniforms based on the number of schools
within a 2-5 mile radius of Overtown. These schools include, but are not limited
to, Frederick Douglass Elementary, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, Dunbar
Elementary, Downtown Miami Charter School, Gibson Charter School, Aspira
Charter School, Eneida Hartner Elementary, Jose De Diego Middle School,
Booker T. Washington High School, Law Enforcement Academy High School, I
Prep Academy, Primary Learning Center, Bridge Prep Academy, RJW Arts and
Science Academy, which all require uniforms for attendees. The plethora of
schools, preschools and daycares in the Greater Downtown area creates a
unique set of needs to meet and an outstanding target customer base. Although
some preschools and daycares already enforce uniforms, others that don't may
take this standard in consideration because we will be so close by.
There are many benefits of uniforms. Research shows that the implementation
of school uniforms increases school safety, reduces discipline problems,
enhances the learning environment, decreases theft, reduces low self-esteem
and peer pressure and creates a sense of unity and school spirit.
We will carry nationally recognized brands along with customize items. Suppliers
include, but are not limited to, Hidalgo Kids LLC, Stani Corporation, and Dickie
brand. Hidalgo Kids LLC is a Miami based company established in 1976, Hidalgo's
is known for its integrity and commitment to serve it customer. They represent a
comprehensive portfolio of renowned and sought after global brands. They
selections, styles and sizes will range to cover many of the needs of the local
schools in the Miami -Dade School district.
We will mainly satisfy the great demand for affordable school shopping, we will
also carry shoes, book bags, summer clothes, swim suits and accessories which
will increase profit and broaden the success and longevity of the store.
The overall present demand for school uniforms & clothing remains very good.
Market growth is in an upward motion as new developments are set in the

community. Our marketing strategy will focus heavily on sales promotion, niche
positioning, and customer service with loyalty and retention in sales. We will
also partner directly with the schools, parks and community centers to get the
most advertising visibility possible. The outlook for the near future looks good.
We have a number of advantages that will allow us to build our brand identity,
add value to our merchandise and build a loyal customer base while standing
apart from our competitors.
The other thing that will most definitely set this business apart is the fact that
we will hire local residents, especially young adults. The positions will allow
young adults to experience being in the workforce and provide a life enhancing
opportunity. I believe many urban young adults fail in the workforce because of
lack of experience. I will give this experience to launch our community to new
heights and empower lives. Positions will range from part-time and full time
Sales Associates, Cashiers, Embroiders, Managers, and Security. We will be an
active and vocal member in the community supporting developmental events
and non-profit organizations working with children.
My history and experience being a resident and business owner in Overtown
gives me insight and edge to ensure the success of the business. I am familiar
with the privileges and challenges that come with owning and running a
business in Overtown. However, I am encouraged by the privilege of advancing
my community by initiating new ventures and empowering the residents to
succeed. With this in mind, I am ready to push through obstacles and build a
business that will last.
