March 21, 2016 File: 16-00161 and Members of the CRA Board Subject: Resolution Authorizing the Acceptance of a Grant from Knight Foundation for the 2016 Overtown Music & Arts Festival. From: Clarence E. Woods, III References: Executive Director Enclosures: Supporting Documentation; Legislation BACKGROUND: The attached Resolution of the Board of Commissioners of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency ("CRA") authorizes the acceptance of a grant, in the amount of $50,000, from the Knight Foundation ("Foundation") to underwrite costs associated with the production of the 2016 Overtown Music & Arts Festival ("Festival") scheduled to occur on July 23, 2016. The Foundation was established in 1950 in Ohio to provide grants to local educational, cultural, and social service institutions as well as to journalism -related causes. Thereafter, the Foundation increased its assets and expanded its grant programs to various cities throughout the country. Today, the Foundation supports a wide array of projects and programs that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities, and foster the arts. In 2008, the Foundation launched the "Knight Arts Challenge" grant program in Miami to support the best and most innovative ideas out of local organizations and individuals seeking to transform the community through the arts. The CRA submitted a grant application for the Festival to further develop the festivals offerings by incorporating more local artists and live art, recruiting higher profile musicians, and increase marketing efforts for the event. On November 30, 2015, the Foundation awarded the CRA $50,000 for the Festival as a result of the application. This Resolution accepts that same. JUSTIFICATION: Section 2, Goal 5, at page 11, of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Plan ("Plan") lists the promotion of "local cultural events, institutions, and businesses," as a stated redevelopment goal. Further, Section 2, Principle 14, at page 16, of the Plan provides for the "resto[ration of] a sense of community and unif[ication in] the area culturally," as a stated redevelopment principle. FUNDING: This Resolution dons not commit funding.
