TheUrbanCollective will house a number of galleries - ten to fifteen - under one umbrella, creating a large central pavilion and building an entire theme around the art and culture of Africa and its Diaspora, providing a centralized space to house the art of this region during Art Basel. Art Africa Miami Arts Fair will be hosted in a tent pavilion that will give our fair goers and exhibitors an opportunity to experience an unparalleled body of work selected by a jury of art professionals whose contributions to the art world are extensive and of critical importance to both seasoned and emerging artists and galleries alike. Each year Art Basel Miami attracts a multitude art buyers, collectors, curators and gallery owners to our fair city. It draws over 75,000 visitors, offers more than 5,000 gallery venues and creates over $2.5 billion in sales revenue over the seven day event. The number of museums, galleries, and studios that proffer this wealth of visual art continue to increase exponentially each year and in response, the visitors and the revenues they bring to the community at large also continue to increase. In short, Art Basel is the world's pre-eminent contemporary art fair whose cultural significance and revenue generating ability cannot be under estimated. However, as South Florida temporarily transforms into the international Mecca for art during Art Basel, the local Black art community continues to struggle to establish a significant presence in the expo. Since the launch of Art Africa Miami Arts Fair in 2011, a small few of others have followed suit and created other venues that exhibit art from the African Diaspora, and these venues tend to be found here and there, scattered in various smaller artspaces throughout the city. The Art Africa Miami Arts Fair is the first art fair during Art Basel Miami to showcase solely art work from the Diaspora and we have received widespread recognition for it. The paucity of venues in Basel week that support and/or promote African art does a disservice to the fair itself and the city which hosts it. That such a situation exists ignores the fact that African art is a fundamental tenet in the development of cubism, modern sculpture, woodcutting and blocking and other contemporary media. It was African art which inspired and made significant impressions on renowned Spanish and French contemporary artists such as Picasso, Henri Matisse and Andre Breton among a great many others, yet African art remains underrepresented. Taj Hunter Waite 954.283.7195 CONTACT Yvette Harris 786.897.88544 It is our belief that Historic Overtown, as the bygone epicenter of Black Arts and Culture, must continue to be the destination for this yearly celebration of the very best cultural capital emanating from the African Diaspora; a first class event bridging Historic Overtown's swinging past with its elegant future. Fair goers will have the opportunity to Shop, Dine and Explore the best of Overtown's commercial businesses as we venture to engage local vendors by offering Art Africa Specials during the run of the event. This will prove a mutually beneficial business model for both our local small businesses, Miami CRA, and Art Africa Miami alike. Additionally, we are engaging local universities such as Florida International University to create frequent exhibitions, placing Historic Overtown in the center of ongoing cultural and academic dialogue, adding yet another layer of tangible opportunity for the empowerment of this wonderful community. By advancing both local and global African, African -American and Afro -Caribbean artists, Art Africa Miami can create a wider audience and broaden the scope of opportunities available to the artists, galleries and local small businesses that participate in the successful fruition of Art Africa Miami Arts fair. We seek to transform, educate and enlighten the international community to the depth and breadth of art emanating from our local Black community, allowing artists from the Diaspora a chance to leave their distinct mark on Art Basel and the international art clientele which it attracts. For 2015, we have extended invitations to an esteemed list of renowned artists, curators and gallerists to exhibit in this landmark effort and as you are a member of this revered group, we look forward to your participation. In his eyes, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The Miami born artist grew up in the inner city in a single -parent home. The middle child of five, he remembers how his mother worked two jobs to make ends meet. To pass the time, Antonio and his brother began doodling for fun. It was not long before his talent was recognized at the Center for Expressive Art program where Lillia Garcia took him under her wing. He still refers to her affectionately as his Cuban art mom. As a police officer, Antonio is privy to the ever -changing human drama, played out in the theater of the streets. There he witnesses a myriad of faces, expressions and postures: grief, joy, apathy, fear. He later captures these emotions on canvas, relinquishing them back to society. Antonio is most known for his use of oils and particularly graphite. "it reveals the beauty of light and shadow," he says. He is inspired by Charles White, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden. Antonio received his Associate of Art degree at Miami -Dade Community College and later his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at Florida Memorial University. His work often reflects the fundamental human condition, told in story -like fashion, narrating tales of both struggle and transcendence. Here the complexity in his work is evident by his use of short, many -colored brush strokes in the muted and primary palette of the Impressionists, while also employing chiaroscuro, the interplay between shadow and light on his subjects. The interplay speaks to the double consciousness that infuses his worldview. Kialeuka's influences come from his immediate environment, inspired by the people in his life: friends, family, fellow artists, and his larger social network. He frequently utilizes themes which capture both rural life in the South, as well as urban locations which are rooted in his personal perception of class, identity, common access to social resources, community infrastructure, education and consumerism. He negotiated with community leaders in the infamous slums of Cite Soleil where he introduced various programs such as The Integration for Social and Economic Development. Carl chose to leave the power structure to satisfy his thirst to unleash his creative talent in the arts: painting, photography and music. As a self-taught artist, he brilliantly and skillfully captures the beauty that is embedded in Haitian culture. His belief is that hope lies in the human spirit and by capturing the balance between the delicate facial expressions and body language of his subjects, his message can be conveyed. His first art lessons came as a result of winning a draw the clown contest in his senior year, which gave him the opportunity to receive some instruction in art, although only for a short time. Following four years of military service in Vietnam, he enrolled at the University of Miami where he majored in Painting. "After two years, I figured I was ready for the world of art". Following several commercial art jobs, he eventually landed a position at the Metro Zoo as a designer, where he remained for the next six years, which was followed by an additional three years as a designer for Disney World. I never used to paint with canvas until recently I painted only on paper because 1 liked the way it absorbed the paint. My work used to be tame and had no direction. I was growing, learning how to develop a style, more so than a technique. As years went by, after exploring and experimenting I have learned to paint my feelings, utilizing them as the driving force in my work. When I am sad, I paint. Happy? I paint. My addictions, relationships, anger, pain? I paint. I believe you can see my feelings everywhere in my work. When I paint in my studio it's like I am in a trance. 1 never sketch; I start with the blank space and it just comes to me as I go along. By the time 1 am finished, I am covered head to toe with paint. "1 use wood, metal, paper, anything I can paint on. I have also created a film capsule, documenting development and change in certain areas of the city of Miami during the construction boom of 2005. Concepts of place and space are constant themes in my work. These interests have been heightened as my partner in the historic rehabilitation projects is an architect and urban designer. I am also fascinated with the depiction of moments, time and change in life. My current work Lala's Dirt Kitchen was inspired by Lala (a four year old) cooking in her kitchen, an architectural feature of her own making, originally set up on an old wooden bench in her yard. This work highlights my interest in space and how life takes place in and is defined by the context of rooms, gardens, streets, etc. Her creation of the dirt kitchen has facilitated her experience of cooking and role-playing. This moment is one of those that grab me, and I've recorded it in photos, film and on canvas. Lela was so kind as to let me borrow her kitchen, so I have installed it for others to experience. This is how I reconcile the diverse media that I work with and ravel it into something cohesive. Welcome to Lala's Dirt Kitchen. I've been cookin' somethin up. Mr. McKnight has realized a number of major public artworks in Miami: Says McKnight, "My mission as an artist is to create works that are individual in style and content reflecting my heart and soul, stretching the poetic and artistic license in both material and content." "My art is spontaneous; it is about the rhythms and patterns that are all around us. It is a silent music. It is meant to delight the eye then trigger the audience to react one way or the other. I look to the symmetry in nature as a springboard to launch shapes and forms into desperate dances of inspiration." "There is a poet who dwells within me and cries to be heard...I tried to keep him silent with images. He found his voice and poured out of them disregarding my cries that he remain silent for the sake of normality. I took his voice; welded it into my vision and together we speak of tales near and dear; of thoughts new and gold in valleys at the bottom of mountains that soar well beyond the moons. My work is a song of fantasy." TODD ELIOTT MANSA Title: Sojourn of the Day Twin Size: 48x64 Media: Oil on Canvas TEtiott Mansa was born in 1977 and raised in Miami, FL.
