Woods, III References: Executive Director Enclosures: Supporting Documentation; Legislation BACKGROUND: The attached Resolution of the Board of Commissioners of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency ("CRA") authorizes the issuance of a grant, in an amount not to exceed $50,000, to Transition, Inc. ("Transition") to underwrite costs associated with general operations for supportive services provided to ex -offenders. Transition is a nonprofit corporation established in 1972 to assist ex -offenders reintegrate into society after incarceration with its principal office located at 1600 N.W. 3`d Avenue, Building C, Miami, Florida 33136. Thousands of inmates are released from state prison annually and one of the greatest obstacles they must overcome is transitioning into society. Transition assists ex -offenders by providing supportive services, such as job training, job placement, intensive counseling, and cognitive/behavioral training in an effort to reduce their recidivism rate. Transition has requested financial assistance from the CRA in order to underwrite costs associated with immediate and critical operational needs of the organization that are necessary to continue providing supportive services to ex -offenders in the community. JUSTIFICATION: Section 2, Goal 4, at page 11, of the 2009 Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Plan ("Plan") lists the "creatiton of] jobs within the community," and Section 2, Goal 6, at page 11, of the Plan lists "improving the quality of life for residents," as a stated redevelopment goals. Section 2, Principle 4, at page 14, of the Plan further provides "that employment opportunities be made available to existing residents ..." FUNDING: $50,000 allocated from SEOPW Tax Increment Fund, entitled "Other Grants and Aids" Account No. 10050.920101.883000.0000.00000.
