Church %tshhstlnhet ilet,(:itt Utr meter 245 NW s St. / Miami, FL 33186 www, tha}loQiteIitvinstItute, corn Program Overview The Hospitality Institute was created in 2007 to connect underserved inner city residents, particularly those In the Overtown/Park West CRA where unemployment rates far exceed those of the rest of city and state, with training and employment opportunities in the local hospitality industry. Miami Dade College administers the program through crucial funding provided by the Community Redevelopment Agency and additional funding or support from a unique collaboration of partners including: the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dress for Success, local hoteliers and businesses, outreach organizations and a host of volunteers. The current structure of the Hospitality Initiative is focused around quarterly four -day workshops that provide foundational training for participants in various aspects of hospitality operations, customer service, workforce preparation, interview skills, financial literacy, banquet set-up, and computer skills. Participants have the opportunity to complete American Hotel and Lodging Association certifications and attend a job fair on the final day. The Safe Staff Food Safety instruction and Certification Program is also provided for the participants of each session. Since the inception of the program, over 500 individuals received a state mandated 3 year certification for food handling. Program Alumni are then encouraged to visit the office regularly for follow-up to review new weekly job postings and receive ongoing support. Also, the Hospitality Institute has a 40% job placement rate and has provided the industry with over 2,000 individuals for the local labor force. The new Basic Culinary Skills component just started in 2013 and has already served 102 individuals. 2013-2014 Hospitality Institute Successful Expansion Building on the success of the program, Miami Dade College seeks to further bridge the gaps between job training and job placements. Since September of 2012, the Hospitality Institute has expanded its program to include the Basic Culinary Skills Training, Building Better Business Skills Workshops for Overtown businesses, life skills, financial literacy, and more extensive hospitality, customer service, work readiness, and soft skills training. This expansion continues to reflect the needs of the population served as well as the growing local workforce needed by businesses in the Greater Miami and Overtown areas. To enhance services offered to Hospitality institute alumni, a new series of educational programs including industry certifications will be offered throughout the year at no cost to the alumni. Moving forward Miami Dade College would like to expand the educational programs to include health, wellness, and nutrition. By adapting to community and employer needs and leveraging the MDC resources through additional CRA funding, the Hospitality Institute will continue to provide a bridge to opportunity and serve as a platform to empower and connect underserved inner city residents, particularly those in Overtown, with job and educational opportunities that would otherwise be out of their reach. The Ebenezer Church remodeling project has yet to break ground. As future funding is based on being located at Ebenezer, Miami Dade College is submitting this grant request for 2015 to support continued training until Ebenezer is ready for occupancy. In order to continue this expanded program and maintain the current effective hospitality -focused trainings, the 2015 CRA request includes a full-time workforce specialist two part-time assistants and additional funds and supplies for training in the new areas. This budget request also includes one year of funding for 2015, to enable program development and ensure continuity until the Ebenezer Building construction is complete. The budget addresses services provided in the Overtown CRA district. This reflects the core activities of the Hospitality Institute, job training and job placement. Job training will occur in the Overtown community and will require the bulk of grant resources. Job placement will be directed at the businesses in the community and, as such, some grant resources, primarily in the form of personnel costs are requested of the Overtown CRA. Miami Dade College will continue to provide substantial in -kind support to the project. This support includes: program development, supervisory staff support to oversee the Hospitality Institute Workforce Specialist and the two administrators from the International Hospitality Center, technical and administrative support, transportation, access to HMP and top quality Culinary and Hospitality instructors, transportation, and lunches for workshop participants. Ongoing Alumni Support The new trainings described in the following sections represent new ways for the Hospitality Institute to maintain connections to and provide ongoing support to alumni of the four -day trainings. This grant funding will also allow grant staff to spend more time on case management of alumni and provide year-round support to alumni in the areas of job search, job placement, resume review, placement in additional training areas, and referrals to social service agencies as needed. This additional funding for grant staff and services will allow the Hospitality Institute to provide a one -stop site in Overtown aimed at improving the lives of residents. Culinary Trainings The Basic Culinary Skills Training Program will be open to any applicant who has completed the Initial Hospitality Institute four -day training. Ail participants are required to have either a high school diploma or GED. This allows participants to continue their studies at the college level after the completing the training if desired. The trainings will run for twelve weeks on a quarterly basis and provide participants with skills in food preparation and a food handler certification that is mandated by state for anyone working in food establishment. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of their program and be ready for employment in restaurants and other food service businesses. Under the instruction of a skilled chef, trainings will be provided in a professional kitchen and will include hands-on experiences with the Miami ❑ade College Garden. Hospitality Tralnings Miami Dade College has developed a hospitality, gold customer service certification, American Hotel and Lodging Association certification, and certification training that will be offered to interested alumni of the Hospitality institute. Once participants have completed the four -day Hospitality institute training they will be eligible to sign up for this extended offering. This program will run for five weeks. Completing this training will prepare participants for employment in the hospitality industry, the food and beverage industry, or any other position that requires interaction with the public. We are also adding one day workshops in an effort to reach more indMduals. These trainings give our participants an edge and more competitive when they enter the workforce. Soft Skills Work Readiness Trainings Soft Skills Trainings provide participants with skills that employers are looking for, such as appropriate work attire and work place etiquette, but most importantly, soft skills provide participants the skills and tools they need to actually land a job. Training topics include resume writing, resume review, mock interviews, appropriate dress, and coaching on interview follow up techniques. Participants learn skills and confidence which help them successfully navigate the job search and interview process. Ongoing Improvement The Director of the Hospitality Management Program at Miami Dade College will continue to work with Hospitality Institute staff to conduct periodic focus groups with industry representatives to determine areas of additional training need. Hospitality Institute programs will be adjusted as needed to address any additional issues identified through these focus groups. Beyond providing participants with the opportunity to connect with jobs and education, the Hospitality Institute is helping individuals explore, dream and reach opportunities beyond their existing situations. The program Is providing them with the tools they need to get to places they never imagined they could reach. kri9flncni i)acID College w in60Jti ldktddinlHoglClltyCditct THE HOSPITALITY INSTITUTE Grant Request Year (2015) Budget Item Overtown CRA Job Trainings Line Items Hospitality Institute Workforce Specialist (Full Time) $50,000 50,000 Hospitality Institute Workforce Specialist Fringe (29,26%) 14,630 2 Fart time Office Assistant $10.00 per hour x 25 hours per week x 50 weeks 25,000 Office Assistant fringe benefits (1,45%) 363 Short Term Certification Trainings in AHLA Gold Customer Service and Restaurant Server 7,438 Training inst uctors 27,000 Monthly 0free rental @ at Greater Bethel $1000 per month x 12 12,000 HI Stationary/envelopes:/business cards/flyers/brochures/ website updates 1,000 Association memberships and meetings for the Hospitality Human Resources Association, Chamber of Commerce, GMCVB, 2,000 Office Supplies, equipment maintenance, print toner, paper, files, folders, labels 3,000 Telephone/fax & computer DSL line @ $300 per month x 12 4,000 Food Handling Certification training and books 3,200 Graduation Materials 1,000 Sub total 150,631 Basic Culinary Skills Component Chef Trainer- Basic Culinary Skills Training 25,000 Culinary training supplies (including uniforms, knife sets, food small wares, materials, textbooks for training programs) $2,000 per session x 4 sessions 8,000 Educational Food Materials 17,000 Kitchen Rental, maintenance and equipment repairs 12,000 Subtotal Basic Culinary Skills 62,000 Total Grant Funding Request for 2015 212,631 Miami Dade College In -Kind Contributions Personnel: 25% of time - Shelly Fano (25% x 80,226) 20,056 Fringe: 25% of 29.92% fringe for Shelly Fano (25%x 24,004) 6,001 Personnel: 5% of time — Chef Collen Engle (5% x 80,226) 4,012 Fringe: 5% of 29,92% fringe for Chef Collen Engle (5% x 4,012) 201 Consultant for service excellence training 2,500 Service Excellence Training materials and costs ($2,000 per session x 4 sessions per year) 8,000 Mileage Costs (average 50 miles per week x 50 weeks per year x $.445 reimbursement rate) 1,113 Printing Costs 1,000 Office Supplies, duplicating, postage 3,000 Kitchen, staff, supplies and maintenance 15,000 Computer Equipment 2,000 Indirect support (per Miami Dade College's indirect cost rate agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Miami Dade College has an off -campus indirect cost rate of 14% of 212,631) 29,768 Total 92,651 Additional Miami Dade College and community members in -kind contributions: Videography, photography, and technical support for all sessions, student volunteers (working at the MDC garden), marketing, signage, transportation for workshop participants, volunteer motivational speakers for all sessions, soft skill coaches (for resume writing and interview skill trainings) for all sessions.
