BACKGROUND:
The attached Resolution of the Board of Commissioners of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community
Redevelopment Agency ("CRA") authorizes the issuance of a grant, in an amount not to exceed $80,000, to
New Washington Heights Community Development Conference, Inc. ("New Washington Heights") to underwrite
costs associated with the continued operation of Folklife Friday, a monthly open-air market to be held on the 9th
Street Pedestrian Mall for the 2014 calendar year.
New Washington Heights developed "Folklife Fridays," a monthly open-air market that showcases various focal
vendors selling a variety of items, such as arts and crafts, books, jewelry, clothing, and food, on the 9th Street
Pedestrian Mall.
The CRA's Board of Commissioners has previously supported New Washington Heights' operation of Folklife
Fridays since 2010. On March 15, 2010, the Board, by Resolution No. CRA-R-10-0017, authorized the
issuance of a grant, in the amount of $50,000, for the operation of Folklife Fridays. Thereafter, the Board
continued its support by authorizing additional grant funding for Folklife Fridays by passing Resolution Nos.
CRA-R-11 -0005, CRA-R-11-0016, CRA-R-12-0030, and CRA-R-13-0010.
New Washington Heights has requested assistance with continuing Folklife Fridays for the 2014 calendar year.
JUSTIFICATION:
Section 2, Goal 5, at page 11, of the 2009 Southeast Overtown/Park West Redevelopment Plan lists the
promotion of "local cultural events, institutions, and businesses," and restoration of "a sense of community and
unification of the area culturally," as a stated redevelopment goals and objectives.
FUNDING:
$80,000 are to be allocated from SEOPW Tax Increment Fund, entitled "Other Grants and Aids" Account Code
No. 10050.920101.883000.0000.00000.
