The Black Archives Proposal Year 2
2013
GOAL:
The Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc./Historic Lyric
Theater documented as the anchor institution for the revitalization of Overtown, wishes to
continue to program the Ward Rooming House Gallery Cultural Tourist Center as historic sites
in Miami's Historic Overtown Folklife District. The Black Archives will provide technical
support, artifacts and materials as well as partner with other museums and artists to provide
several exhibitions over a period of one year at the Ward Rooming House. This programming
includes the continued support to establishing the Historic Overtown Walking Tours and Cultural
Heritage Institute.
PURPOSE:
Our purpose is to strengthen the ongoing visual arts presence in the Ward Rooming House
Gallery and the cultural arts training program through The Black Archives. Programming will
continue to enhance the revitalization efforts of the Historic Overtown Folklife District by
introducing tourist and reintroducing the citizens of Miami Dade to this once vibrant community,
The Black Archives will continue to fabricate, install, and strike rotating exhibits for residents,
visitors, and tourist, and/or attract at least one national traveling exhibit at the site; manage and
maintain a heritage tourism program in conjunction with Lyric Theater programming for Historic
Overtown that will be housed in the Ward Rooming House (until 2013); continue to develop and
maintain a presence for the Historic Overtown Folklife Village, its events, sites, business and
organizations on the world wide web; identify and train indigenous residents of Overtown to
assist in the documentation, digitization, cataloging, and presentation of housed artifacts in the
collection of the Black Archives; select and train indigenous residents of Overtown to serve as
docents at the gallery and for the Historic Overtown Walling Tours; and continue to develop and
provide unique integrated community programming at the Ward Gallery that will be presented at
the Lyric Theater once completed.
This grant will allow the Black Archives to continue to bring a multi cultural traffic flow to the
area, as well as educate and help to dispel negative views about this historic community.
Through Ward Gallery programming, the history of Black Miami will be the basis at the gallery
and community outreach training program that will connect with Lyric programming to empower
Overtown residents
We believe that progress and continued success will come from our combined efforts and are
eager to take the first steps in making this reality.
