THE HOSPITALITY INSTITUTE
Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church
245 NW 8 St / Miami, FL33136
www.thehospltalityinstitute.com
Program Overview
The Hospitality institute was created in 2007 to connect underserved inner city residents,
particularly those in the Overtown/Park West CRA where unemployment rates far exceed those
of the rest of city and state, with training and job opportunities in the local hospitality industry.
Miami Dade College administers the program through crucial funding provided by the
Community Redevelopment Agency and additional funding or support from a unique
collaboration of partners including: the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, the Greater
Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Black Hospitality Initiative, Dress for Success, local
hoteliers and businesses, outreach organizations and a host of volunteers.
The current structure of the Hospitality Initiative is focused around quarterly four -day workshops
that provide training for participants in various hospitality operations, customer service, interview
skills, and computer skills. Participants have the opportunity to complete American Hotel and
Lodging Association certifications and attend a job fair on the final day. Program alumni are
then encouraged to visit the office on a regular basis to review new weekly job posting and
receive ongoing support. As of March, 2011, the Hospitality Institute has placed 335 people into
jobs and provided training to over 1,000.
2012-2014 Hospitality Institute Expansion
Building on the success of the program, Miami Dade College seeks to further bridge the gaps
between job training and job placement. In 2012, the Hospitality Institute will expand to include
culinary industry trainings, potential community garden experiences, life skills, and more
extensive hospitality, customer service and soft skills training. This expansion reflects the needs
of the population served as well as the growing local workforce need. To enhance services
offered to Hospitality Institute Alumni, a new series of free educational programs will be offered
throughout the year. In 2012 -2014 the new educational programs will include entrepreneurship
education and financial literacy. in future years Miami Dade College would like to expand the
educational programs to include health and nutrition. in the 2012-2014 project period grant
funds will also be used to cover GED registration fees for interested participants.
By adapting to community and employer needs and leveraging the MDC resources through
additional CRA funding, the Hospitality institute will bridge the gap to opportunity and serve as a
platform to empower and connect underserved inner city residents, particularly those in
Overtown, with job and educational opportunities that would otherwise be out of their reach.
In order to enact this expansion and maintain the current effective hospitality -focused trainings,
the 2012 CRA request includes a full-time manager, a case manager, a workforce development
coordinator, two part-time assistants and additional funds and supplies for training in the new
areas. This budget request also includes two years of funding (2012 — 2013, 2013 — 2014), to
enable program development and ensure continuity as these new features are implemented.
The budget has been divided to address services provided in the Overtown CRA district and the
Omni CRA district. This reflects two core activities of the Hospitality Institute, job training and job
placement. Job training will occur in the Overtown community and will require the bulk of grant
resources. Job placement will be directed at the businesses in the Omni community and, as
such, some grant resources, primarily in the form of personnel costs, are requested of the Omni
CRA. Miami Dade College will continue to provide substantial in -kind support to the project
including program development and supervision of time of two administrators from the
International Hospitality Center, technical and administrative support, and lunches for training
workshop participants.
Ongoing Alumni Support
The new trainings described in the following sections represent new ways for the Hospitality
Institute to maintain connections to and provide ongoing support to alumni of the four -day
trainings. This grant funding will also allow grant staff to spend more time on case management
of alumni and provide year-round support to alumni in the areas of job search, job placement,
resume review, placement in additional training areas, and referrals to social service agencies
as needed, This additional funding for grant staff and services will allow the Hospitality Institute
to provide a one -stop site in Overtown aimed at improving the lives of residents.
Culinary Trainings
The culinary industry training program will be open to any applicant who has completed the
initial Hospitality Institute four -day training. The trainings will run for twelve weeks on a quarterly
basis and provide participants with skills in food preparation and a food handler certification that
is mandated by state for anyone working in food establishment. Participants will receive a
certificate of completion at the end of their program and be ready for employment in restaurants
and other food service businesses. The trainings will be provided in a professional kitchen and
will include hands-on experiences with the Miami Dade College Garden.
Hospitality Trainings
Miami Dade College has developed a hospitality, customer service, and certification training that
will be offered to interested alumni of the Hospitality institute. Once participants have completed
the four -day Hospitality Institute training they will be eligible to sign up for this extended offering.
This program will run for five weeks. Completing this training will prepare participants for
employment in the hospitality industry, the food and beverage industry, or any other position
that requires interaction with the public.
Entrepreneurial Education
Entrepreneurial education programs will be offered to returning Hospitality Institute alumni.
These programs will include half -day group instruction and work sessions, offered four times per
year during the Hospitality Institute workshops. This will introduce the topic to participants and at
that time they will have the opportunity to sign up for week-long sessions, which will be offered
four times per year. The program will be designed and run by the Miami Dade College Carrie P.
Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center, which has over twenty years of experience providing
entrepreneurial education training to low-income residents in Liberty City.
Financial Literacy
Financial literacy programs will be offered to returning Hospitality Institute alumni. These
programs will be run as monthly half -day group instruction and work sessions. In addition, after
each session a certified financial planner will offer up to six one-on-one sessions for participants
interested in additional information. The group program will be designed and run by the Center
for Financial Training, which is housed at Miami Dade College and has extensive experience
providing financial education and training programs for the public and the financial services
industry.
Ongoing Improvement
The Director of the Hospitality Management Program at Miami Dade College will work with
Hospitality Institute staff to conduct annual focus groups with industry representatives to
determine areas of additional training need. Hospitality Institute programs will be adjusted as
needed to address any issues identified through these focus groups. Beyond providing
participants with the opportunity to connect with education and jobs, the Hospitality Institute is
helping individuals explore and dream of the possibilities beyond their existing situations. It is
providing them with the tools they need to get to places they never imagined they could reach.
