BACKGROUND:
It is recommended that the Board of Commissioners of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community
Redevelopment Agency ("CRA") approve and adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the Executive Director
to collaborate with Camillus House, Inc. for the creation of the Construction Institute Pilot Program.
On March 25, 2010, the Board of Commissioners authorized the issuance of a grant, in a total amount not to
exceed $10 million, to Camillus House, Inc. to aid in the construction of its new homeless assistance facility in
the redevelopment area. This project will create new construction jobs.
The Construction Institute Pilot Program is intended to offer training to residents of the redevelopment area in an
effort to increase the available pool of eligible construction workers from within the redevelopment area.
The CRA will collaborate with Camillus House and bring back to the Board a program sufficient for approval and
funding at the next scheduled CRA Board meeting.
JUSTIFICATION:
Section 2, Goal 4/Principle 4, at pages 11 and 14, of the 2009 Southeast Overtown/Park West Redevelopment
Plan lists employment opportunities, and states that ". . . [e]mployment opportunities be made available to
existing residents of Overtown," as stated redevelopment goals.
This Resolution carries out these goals.
