BACKGROUND:
The attached Resolution authorizes the issuance of a grant, in an amount not to exceed $14,300, to underwrite
costs associated with the "Stop the Violence 2010" Initiative organized by the Overtown Community Oversight
Board.
Violence against young people is a growing concern within the Overtown community. The Overtown Community
Oversight Board ("OCOB") wishes to address this issue by organizing a day of events that focus on crime
awareness and prevention.
OCOB has submitted a proposal to the CRA requesting assistance with "Stop the Violence 2010" events held
within the Redevelopment Area. "Stop the Violence 2010" activities will include the following:
1) Overtown Run & Awards Ceremony - a 3 mile race through the Redevelopment Area and an
awards ceremony for the winners;
2) "Tree of Life" presentation - participants will adorn a tree with yellow ribbons to honor the lives lost
to violence;
3) Teen maze - a life-size game that engages and educates teens to help them understand the
choices they make and the consequences of those actions; and an
4) Open forum discussion regarding the community's concerns.
JUSTIFICATION:
Principle 14, at page 17, of the 2009 Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Plan lists
"[r]estor[ing] a sense of community and unify[ing] the area culturally;" as a stated redevelopment principle.
This Resolution fulfills that principle.
FUNDING: $14,300 from SEOPW Tax Increment Fund, "Other Grants and Aids," Account Code No.
