D, Miami, Moricla )3 1 j6-1 8 1 0 PROPOSED SCOPE OF WORK ROOTS IN THE CITY LANDSCAPE TRAINING INSTITUTE AND BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM Roots In The City proposes to begin a modified Landscape Training Institute and Beautification Program for enhancement of the Third Avenue corridor in Overtown by hiring and training unemployed Overtown residents in urban gardening and specialty food growing and marketing. Using the sites designated in Attachment 1 as the on-the-job training sites and the FDOT Overtown office for classroom training, participants will participate in at least 82 hours of classroom training and 90 hours of supervised field training to attain a certificate of graduation. We propose to deliver the full training module to at least eight participants, and at least eight other participants will be offered the full program if they and Roots agree that the program is a "good fit" for each. This approach allows for drop -outs and administrative dismissals, which are a common occurrence in this program. Each dismissed probationary or accepted trainee will be replaced so that the full complement of graduated trainees may be attained. Roots will aim to graduate four trainees in each of four training cycles, but experience teaches that half of the recruited trainees do not complete the program. Allowing a probationary period will give Roots staff an opportunity to achieve the goal of sixteen graduates within the year. Trainees will be recruited from the Overtown community, assessed during a three-week probationary period, and upon acceptance to the Institute will be documented and trained in the course outlined in the Roots In The City Training Manual. Upon graduation, Roots In The City will provide assistance with job referrals and provide documentation of same to the CRA. Training will be provided by Roots in The City staff as well as invited speakers from other agencies and businesses. The field training will be delivered using the existing beautification beds along Third Avenue as well as the expanded vegetable garden area on lots to be cultivated for growing vegetables and herbs on land loaned by the Collins Center. Roots In The City will continue the community engagement component of the Institute by donating available fresh produce to community residents, schools and service agencies. Additionally, Roots In j]pard Members The City annually hosts community volunteers from all walks of life. During their service the volunteers are given an brief orientation to Overtown, the urban gardening program, and the Landscape Training Institute. This influx of visitors to Overtown not only provides free labor in the program, it also expands the opportunity for Overtown businesses to serve new customers, establishes a comfortable atmosphere for visitors, enhances their knowledge of Miami history, and provides a brief experience in urban gardening, the benefits of which can be spread to other neighborhoods. The community engagement coordinator will engage the external Overtown community by obtaining and coordinating volunteers, soliciting donations, involving residents in the work of the farm, extending outreach to schools and educational programs, and tapping the existing market for potential sales outlets as well as job referrals. • a W KOOT5 IN Tb r CITY, iNC• Non-rrofitUrban beautification 1 600 NW » Ave, 5ldg.
