Villacorta 1_'-\References: Executive Director 111 Date: October 16, 2009 File: 09-01188 Subject: Resolution Authorizing a Grant to New Washington Heights CDC for the Continuation of "Folklife Fridays" on the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall. Enclosures: Legislation BACKGROUND: It is recommended that the Board of Commissioners of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency ("CRA") approve and adopt the attached Resolution authorizing a grant, in an amount not to exceed $50,000, to New Washington Heights Community Development Conference, Inc. (New Washington Heights") for the continuation of "Folklife Fridays," a monthly open-air market to be held for six consecutive months on the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall in Overtown. The Board of Commissioners, by Resolution No. CRA-R-08-0059, passed and adopted on November 3, 2008, authorized a grant, in an amount not to exceed $50,000, to New Washington Heights for the production of "Folklife Fridays," a monthly open-air market to be held for six consecutive months, on the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall. New Washington Heights has requested a grant for the continuation of "Folklife Fridays." The series of open-air markets will continue to showcase various local vendors, selling a variety of items, such as arts and crafts, books, jewelry, clothing, and food. it is anticipated that the monthly event will also continue to run from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and feature live music during the lunch hour. JUSTIFICATION: Section III.B., at page 13, of the 1982 Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Plan, as amended, lists "[r]estor[ing] a sense of community and unify[ing] the area culturally" as a stated redevelopment objective. This series of open-air events on the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall furthers this objective. FUNDING: $50,000 from SEOPW Tax Increment Fund, "Other Grants and Aids," Account Code No. 10050.920101.883000.0000.00000.
