ROOTS IN THE CITY
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND
LANDSCAPE TRAINING AND BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM
Using the sites designated in Attachment I as the on-the-job training sites and the FDOT office in
Overtown for classroom training, Roots in the City will conduct a community engagement and
landscape beautification program by providing formalized training in landscaping and urban
agriculture to at least four trainees who will be referred to other jobs following training. A
minimum of 500 volunteers will also attend training sessions for a minimum of forty days of
community service during the program year. The trainees will include volunteers, students and
others from both inside and outside of the Overtown area, but program trainees will all be from
that community. The program will use the designated sites for training purposes while also
maintaining each of the sites for twelve months. Specifically the Scope of Work will include the
following:
Training
The training manual and evaluation model developed last year will be used.
The training modules will span four to six weeks and include landscape installation and
maintenance skills as well as life skills (job interviewing, GED attainment, work skills, personal
communication skills, social skills, interaction with government entities, etc.).
The trainees will receive a certificate of completion and assistance with job referrals to other
private and public sector employers as needed.
Training sessions will be open to the public as well as employees.
The Overtown vegetable garden will be used to grow and sell collard greens and other produce in
order to contribute to the sustainability of the project.
Groups from various institutions including colleges, schools and religious organizations will be
engaged through volunteer service at all of the sites, but especially in the vegetable garden and
the main garden.
