HOSPITALITY TRAINING INSTITUTE
The Veterans Employment Transition Services, Inc. (VETS, Inc.) is a 501(c)3 established
in 2004 for the purpose of providing job training and long term job placement services
for veterans and residents of distressed communities. The agency has developed a seven -
step employment process called Veterans Works that insures job success. It recruits, pre-
screens, and provides job readiness and job skills training, matches skills with employer
needs and places qualified clients on jobs.
The organization was established to alleviate high unemployment in distressed
communities throughout the City of Miami and Miami Dade County.
The company's objective is to positively affect the lives of youth, ex -offenders, women
who head single family households and veterans who reside in distressed neighborhoods.
This would be accomplished through counseling, training and on-the-job experiences that
lead to a career path that elevates the quality of life and provides adequate living wages.
Veterans Employment Transition Services, Inc. has successfully implemented a pilot
program in the Model City community and wish to expand their services to the Overtown
community.
In 2004, VETS, Inc. pre-screened 220 people (includes drug testing & character
assessments), placed 48 people on jobs, established relationships with 12 employers and
facilitated over $500,000 in earnings for those placed in jobs. In 2005 VETS., Inc. pre-
screened 110, referred 45 people for job placement and placed 30 in jobs, In 2006
VETS,Inc. prescreened 180 people, referred 101 people for job placement and placed 68
on jobs.
VETS, Inc., Proposes to establish an office in Overtown in the heart of the CRA district.
The office will be permanently located in the New Arena Square Building. The institute
will be temporarily housed in the Bethal African Methodist Episcopal Church (BAME) in
Overtown. It will be a one stop facility which will recruit, pre-screen, and provide job
readiness and job skills training, match skills with employer's needs and place qualified
candidates on jobs. It will also house service providers who will assist people in the
community in qualifying for affordable housing and matching those who qualify with
builders and developers who have vacancies.
The Hospitality Training Institute is a partnership between Doubletree Hotel, Hilton
Hotels and Miami Works.
VETS, Inc. scope of work for 2007-2008 will include but is not limited to the following:
o Pre-screen 25 clients per month
o Place 6 clients on jobs per month
o Recruit 1 new employer per month
o Collaborate with other community agencies to establish an integrated service
network
o Collaborate with Miami Dade County Public Schools to identify students from
Booker T. Washington Senior High School and Lindsey Hopkins Technology
Center to train and place with VETS, Inc. employers.
o Conduct job readiness workshops
o Provide computer access to clients to develop client profiles, write resumes,
research job prospects, assess careers, and for individualized testing and training
for job placement
o Provide client access to a FAX machine and telephones for the purpose of
sending resumes to perspective employers and to set up interviews
