The words -which sit on the desk of her Miami studio - provide inspiration on a daily basis. She plans to bring the message to life in "Like Minds". Like minds is a series of photographs capturing the people, from all walks of life, who make up the urban core. From the little Puerto Rican lady who has lived in Wynwood for the last 60 years, to the artist who works in the 'hood, to the banker who lives in the new loft, to a construction worker building a new landmark, to the urban hipster who is holding their breath until the scene pops, to the guy who lives on a street corner bench. Together, they represent a new community, a fresh beginning. Miami is on the verge of a cultural transformation. It is finally gelling as a big city, coming into it's own as a unique American capital. The heartbeat of that city is the urban core. In "Like Minds" the poem is broken into 18 images one for each line of the poem. "Like Minds" is first -of -its -kind large scale public photo installation with nationwide potential. Betty Rosado whose work is typically viewed within the constraints of gallery walls is stepping outside with "Like Minds". A community is a reflection of its people and the images of "Like Minds" shows that despite our differences we all want what's best for our families, ourselves and our community. A projection onto our city, a hope that with like minds we can and will absolutely make change collectively in our worlds" says Rosado. "Like Minds" project hopes to convey a simple message in the hopes that it inspires those who view it. "Like Minds" will be accessible for everyone to view. Art installation is a 7 story building located on Miami Avenue and 13th street can be viewed from the entire surrounding neighborhoods of Overtown and Park West in addition it is visible from 395, the Carnival Center, Ice Palace (host of the NADA Fair) and CIFO art gallery. This is Ms. Rosado second show at Art Basel, the first of which received critical acclaim. Anyway. People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed over night. Build anyway. People need help but may attack you if you help. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you will get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have Anyway. BY DANIEL CHANG dchang@MiamiHerald.com For Miami artist Betty Rosado, Art Basel Miami Beach is the Super Bowl of arts events. So to grab the attention of the tens of thousands of international art lovers who will visit South Florida for the fair's fifth visit Thursday through Sunday, Rosado has prepared a project that will be hard to miss — because they won't be seeing her work otherwise at Art Basel this year. Rosado is in the process of wrapping a series of large photographic portraits around a seven -story building at 13th Street and North Miami Avenue, where it will be visible from the street, the freeway and neighboring buildings. JOHN VANBEEKUM/MIAMI HERALD STAFF THINK BIG: Betty Rosado shows the portraits that will be displayed in grand scale on a Miami building. "There is a good chance that probably within the first week of its being up, we'll have good foot traffic of about 40,000 or 50,000 people seeing this." Each year during Art Basel, South Florida artists not represented in the exclusive fair struggle to participate in some meaningful way. • I. • I • 1 • 1 • f •1 http://www.miami.corn/mld/miamiherald/2006/12/03/news/front/16151885.htm 12/11/2006 MiamiHerald.com 1 12/03/20061 There's an art to getting noticed Page 2 of 4 J. Some yearn to get noticed by the gallerists, collectors, museum curators and trustees in town to shop for art. Others plot to subvert the rigid exclusivity of the art market. Still more strive to challenge the definition of art. Regardless of their motivation, though, all these artists crave an audience. For a pair of Brooklyn artists known as The Organizers, their project would not exist outside the social context of Art Basel. The duo have conjured a complex piece titled The Sams that will incorporate performance, technology, humor and heady ideas about identity and memory. The Sams is a reference to Art Basel Director Samuel Keller, a seemingly omnipresent figure at the fair's numerous openings, gallery and museum events, and parties. For the project, The Organizers intend to gather 50 to 100 actors — all of them bald — to impersonate Keller, who also is bald. The actors will be dispatched Thursday night and Friday to Art Basel events and parties, wearing T-shirts with The Sams logo and mimicking Keller, like improv actors. 'PERFORMANCE ART' "It is a type of performance art," says one of The Organizers, who insist on anonymity until after they launch the project Thursday at Fountain Miami, one of the dozen or so smaller, independent fairs that run concurrently with Art Basel this year. "In this concept," he says, "the artists are organizing and facilitating and essentially creating a framework for other people to play or perform." The Organizers say they will sell T-shirts and other mementos about the project, but they insist that their motives are more about art than profit. "It's not so much about selling," one Organizer says. "It's more about just living this experience and developing it." The Organizers were inspired to create The Sams after one of them visited Art Basel last year. AN INSPIRATION "I had come down to Art Basel for the first time, just to observe, and I'd known about Sam," he says. 'Everyone knows about Sam. I was at one party and I saw Sam, but I wasn't sure. All I knew of him was a picture in a magazine. I sort of wondered, '1s it Sam? I don't know.' ... At that point, it triggered the concept of creating experiences like that for other people — experiences of speculation, confusion, recognition of celebrity within a context." Miami artists Odalis Vaidivieso and Eugenia Vargas also plan to push the boundaries of art with their project, Talking Heads Transmitters, during which the duo will carry recording and broadcasting equipment with them as they conduct interviews with artists, collectors and everyday people about art and other issues, including politics and the war http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/2006/12/03/news/frontl16151885.htm 12/11/2006 Miamillerald.com 112/03/2006 j There's an art to getting noticed Page 3 of 4 The Talking Heads interviews will be broadcast on 1610 AM, using a low -frequency signal, and can be picked up only within a two -square -block radius of the artists. "If you see it as an art project," Valdivieso says, "it works nice as an art performance." Although the artists say they are not necessarily trying to get attention, the project seeks to bring together a broad range of people, not just artists or art lovers. "It has to do with community," Vargas says of the project. 'Because we live in Miami, we believe Miami is a very fragmented community. Radio helps bring communities together." Wynwood will be the setting for a number of Miami's guerrilla art projects. Yvonne Grams, who goes by the pseudonym Eva Love, will take her art — and that of about 15 colleagues -- to the streets, literally, in a show titled Under the Bridge on Saturday night, when thousands of local residents converge on the annual Design District party. Grams says she plans to repeat what she did last year, which was to rent about 10 parking spaces along Northeast First Court, between Northeast 36th and 38th streets, and erect eight -foot -tall white panels for displaying the art, creating a literal "drive - through" gallery. "That's what's so cool about it," she says. "People don't even have to get out of their car." 'IT'S ABORT EXPOSURE' The street show, which is lit with generator -powered lamps at night, began during last year's Art Basel. And although the artists did not sell any work, Grams says she and her colleagues are convinced that what they need is more exposure. "It's not about the sales," she says of the works, which will sell for $200 to $5,000 each. "It's about exposure and putting it in their face over and over and over again." In case anyone missed Under the Bridge last year, Grams and her colleagues ensured maximum exposure by transporting their works in a 27-foot-long if -Haul box truck. They drove the truck to public viewings of private collections and to Collins Park in Miami Beach, where Art Positions is situated. At each spot, they parked outside, rolled up the door and waited for the customers to come. The artists got a lot of attention with the truck. "People were just so taken by what we were doing and thought we were so innovative," Grams says. They plan to do the same thing this year. "If they're not going to come to our art shows," Grams says, "were going to start going to their art shows, opening the truck and letting people see our artwork and get some attention here." Rosado, the creator of Like Minds, expects to get attention for her public exhibition for as long as the portraits are up on the building, which will be a few months — long enough to capitalize on other local events, like Super Bowl XLI and the South Beach Wine & Food http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/2006/ 12/03/news/front/16151885.htm 12/11/2006 Miamillerald.com 112/03/2006 I There's an art to getting noticed Page 4 of 4 The photos, along with mini -biographies of each of the 17 subjects — who range from local art -world movers to celebrities like former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino - - will be posted on an online gallery at MiamiHerald.com starting today. Rosado says she is also working on installing the images at bus shelters and possibly producing a commercial that would run with the coming attractions at local movie theaters. But it all starts with getting her work out there, especially during Art Basel, which will house 200 American and international galleries, representing more than 2,000 artists and exhibiting paintings, sculpture, video, mixed media and other works. "When you talk about 2,000 [artists] that represent . .. [32] countries are represented, that's amazing," she says. "Being one of those people, regardless of whether you have a little piece on a wall somewhere, it's an amazing feat."
