Perez and City of Miami Community Redevelopment Agency CC RA) Job Fair at the Overtown Youth Center Hundreds of young people between the ages of 15-24 attended the 2009 Youth Summer Career Training Program and Job Fair at the Overtown Youth Center last week. The Southeast Overtown/ Park West and Omni Community Redevelopment Agencies joined the City of Miami, the Office of Commissioner Michelle Spence -Jones, Work America, Inc., the Overtown Youth Center and South Florida Workforce to present the Youth on The Move!, a ten week summer internship program designed to provide summer job opportunities to young people in various industries, and career development training and skills. The event occurred at the Overtown Youth Center from June 8-10, All applicants were required to be a resident of the City of Miami and between the ages of 15-24. Applicants had to attend the three day training fair and bring two forms of identification (driver's license, school ID, social security card, etc) and their most recent resume at the career training and job fair. More than 150 will receive calls within the coming weeks to know if they were chosen to participate in the internship program. YOUTH ON THE MOVE Summer Training Project 2 • • • WORK AMERICA INC. AGENCY DESCRIPTION Work America provides a range of services to at -risk and economically distressed children and adults via case management, education, outreach, community education and prevention, training and economic development. Currently Work America is on the rise to providing a successful model; improving CBOs and FBOs ability to service their entire community. Facilitating the Work America Training and Contractor Consortium (WATACC) has now become WAI's driving force to improving the capacity of "self -sustainable" families; creating nurturing communities through skillful training centers. YOUTH ON THE MOVE Summer Training Project 4 • • • PROGRAM SCOPE OF SERVICE Program Positions: + Program Coordinator +'r Program Assistant Coordinator + Intake/Data Support Specialist The Youth On the MOVE Summer Training Project is prepared to deliver comprehensive and functional job training and development project for youth ages of 15-24. The program will operate five (5) days a week with specific daily goals and objectives that are required by the Community [Small] Business Employers. • Ages 15-17: Participants are required to work the program four (4) hours per day totaling twenty hours (20) per week with designated Saturdays for "GIVE BACK: Neighborhood Appreciation Projects" volunteerism, • Ages 18-24: Participants are required to work the program five (5) hours per day totaling twenty-five (25) per week with designated Saturdays for "GIVE BACK: Neighborhood Appreciation Projects" of volunteerism. *Motivational Mondays (2hrs): Using the Toastmasters International Mode, facilitated groups will be skilled in public speaking, interviewing, and presentation performance (Ex: Powerpoint). Confidence building techniques to public speaking, interviewing for future career opportunities, guest presenters, daily group presentations, and impromptu speeches are all part of a days work during Motivational Mondays. *Tangible Tuesdays (2hrs): Participants set obtainable goals and focus their energy on accomplishing them within the time allotted. Each participant will be required to create and "shop around" their resume/CV, participate in mock interviews, and construct debatable topics that relate to their career field of interest. *Working Wednesdays (2hrs): Participants learn how to start, manage, and maintain their own "for -profit" or "non-profit" business. All the steps of registration, filing status and documentation will be the sole responsibility of the 30 participants. *Theory Thursday (2hrs): Participants engage in small and large group planning sessions. Outline agenda that introduces aspiring Trainees to program expectations ' 2. Prepare Trainees for interviewing, public speak, and self -market skills as it relates to obtaining job/career 3. Participating Businesses have the opportunity to interview those persons interested in being mentored/trained at their location. 4. YOM Trainees have the opportunity to select the training job that best suits with their future goals and objectives. • YOM Summer Trainees learn how to appreciate the aspects of the community for which they live or work in through Community Appreciation Projects. TEAM 1 Neighborhood Appreciation Project: Participants will work with Landscape services, Property owners, Keep Miami Beautiful, The Overtown Net Office, The Roots, Work America Inc., Waste Management Services and other "green' organizations that focus on keeping neighborhoods environmentally safe. TEAM 2 Elders Day: Participants will be assigned to senior citizens through residential, churches, community centers, and veteran's services to give 4 hrs of appreciation to "our Elders" contribution to the family and community. TEAM 3 i AM MY BROTHERS' and SISTERS' ICEEPER: Participants will tutor and mentor school age- students as part of a Shadowing Program. Participants will be paired with mentee using a interview process between the student and the mentor. *All participants will be required to hove a Leven! background screening. Participants will be notified prior to screening. Participants will be rotated throughout Saturday to complete aspects of volunteerism all three (3) work assignments. Objective 2: To provide necessary support to small businesses within and around the Park West, Overtown, and Omni CRA boundaries. A dialogue response is required! 10am-11am: "Resume Creation and Job Application Preparation" Participants are given important details for creating a resume employers will appreciate. 11am-12pm: "Work Etiquette" Participants are provided information on work dress codes, punctuality, and sexual harassment idioms and actions, and other work related Human Resource benchmarks. 12pm-12:50pm: "WORKING LUNCH" Participants are asked to NETWORK! Clarification is given as to the importance of networking. 12:50pm-2pm "Mock Interviews" Participants will engage in one-on-one and group setting interviews. 2:0Dpm-2:30pm "Feed Back" Participants are given constructive responses to their overall performance. Day 1 surveys are to be completed by all participants and Fair Facilitators. 2:30pm-3:00pm "Wrap -Up Assignment" Your Finances Is Your Future: Ways To Save Participants are given financial advice on the importance of budgeting and money managing towards the Future. YOUTH ON THE MOVE Summer Training Project 9 • • • Proposed Community Mobilization Jump Start Objective 1: To provide immediate support to the Omni, Park West, and Overtown communities through volunteerism. Objective 2: To strongly encourage neighborhood appreciation amongst Youth On The Move (Y.O.M) participants and the communities they serve. Objective 3: To present the Youth On The MOVE Summer Trainees and participating businesses to the "at -large" members of Park West, Omni, and Overtown Community Redevelopment Agencies {CRAj. Objective 4: To establish monthly community engagement projects that enhance the physical appearance of Park West, Omni and Overtown neighborhoods to positively impacting the minds of those living within or those desiring to move into one of the three service areas. Objective 1: To provide YOM participants with an opportunity to understand environmental balance and the importance community beautification. Objective 2: To give YOM participants an opportunity to become contributing and concern citizens of their community. Objective 3: To establish a continuous awareness of the importance of volunteerism and the benefits community service has on crime, loitering, littering, and other community ailments. Objective 4: To encourage members of the Omni, Park West, and Overtown communities to take ownership and shop within these communities. Bav Clean -Up Project 9:00am-12:OOpm Youth On The Move (Y.O.M.) Summer Trainees will take the day to invest in the clean-up of this place we call home; earth, by cleaning the trash from the Miami Bay. This clean-up is to emphasize the need to respect the earth and keep pollution to a minimal. LOTS-N-LOTS OF TRASH 9:00am-12:00 pm Y.Q.M. Summer Trainees will compete in a trash bag clean-up project where persons will grouped and asked to fill as many bags of trash as possible within the time allotted. They will then be asked to come up with creative ways for disposing of the trash (or recycling) and how to keep trash from re -appearing within those areas. Life -Cycle Butterfly Garden 9:00am-12:00pm Youth On The MOVE (YOM) Summer Trainees build and nurture Overtown's first complete Life -Cycle Butterfly Garden (inspired by Better Communities of America inc.) A Life -Cycle Butterfly Garden is a complete environment for specific spices of butterflies to survive their rather short life span and reproduce for future appreciation. The garden is to "live" as the example for how a community is to provide for its members as well as the members provide for the community and environment. YOUTH ON THE MOVE Summer Training Project 10 • • • SELECTION CRITERIA Youth/Young Adults Ages: 15-24 • Must meet age requirement • Must be a City of Miami resident at the time of placement and/or a member of the Overtown, Park West, or Omni Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) boundaries • Must be able to complete the full 10 weeks of training and Community Mobilization projects. iSmalll Businesses: Overtown and identified CRA boundaries • Must be a certified and registered business that meets outlined Project boundaries. • Must attend all announced and documented events. For example, any interested employer wishing to take part in this project must attend the Job Fair on June 10, 2009. No participants will be placed at anv business that does not meet the requirements outlined therein or established by the funding source.
