A tunnel that would provide
direct access between the sea-
port and Interstates 395 and 95
would require about 150,000
cubic yards of concrete, mostly
for cast -in -place walls, said
Teresa Alvarez, district con-
sultant management engineer
for the Florida Department of
Transportation.
"The tunnel itself will be built
mostly using concrete seg-
ments that are pre -cast," she
said, "and they can come from
anywhere, so it is not an issue.
It will require about 3,000 cu-
bic yards a month, based on
Parsons Brinkerhoff's initial
estimates, and that shouldn't
be a burden here, especially
since construction has slowed
down and there is less demand
on concrete suppliers."
