Filming ofeighttelenovelas generates $28 million county
BY SUZY VALENTINE
Eight telenovelas shot in Miami -Dade
County last year accounted for almost
17% of the $165 million economic impact
from filming,. provisional figures indicate.
Production of the Spanish -language
dramas grew eightfold, from 1999, when
the county staged one telenovela. The
format brought $28 million to the
economy last year.
"That's a significant figure," said Jeff
Peel, director ofthe Miami -Dade Mayor' s
Office of Film & Entertainment, "be-
cause the format is inexpensive per epi-
sode. The number resultsfrom hundreds
and hundreds of episodes"
Representatives of .a Miami mixing
studio said they were reaping the re
wards as a rise in production led to a rise
in distribution. The Kitchen derives mil-
lions from subtitling the format for for-
eign audiences and lays claim to the
largest market share for telenovela dub-
bing in the US.
"New territories are emerging, and that
has affected our business," said CEO Ken
Lorber. `;There is demand for product in
Eastern European markets, and we have
dubbed for audiences in the Ivory Coast."
Telenovelas have found audiences in
Spain, Portugal, the Hispanic communities
of the US;'France, China, Japan, Malaysia
and the Philippines. For The Kitchen, Asia
remains a:largely untapped market.
"We expect that Asian demand will
impact our business," Mr. Lorber said.
"The telenovela is a very popular for-
mat, and lies lucrative because of the
hundreds'of episodes.. We have fulltime

cast members to dub for certain markets."
The company's client base'could swell
following an industry event in Las Ve-
gas that ends today (1/26). Representa-
tives of The Kitchen are attending the
National Association of Television Pro-
gram Executives conference and have
scheduled meetings with a'number of
distributors.
"It's the biggest programming event
of the year," said Deeny Kaplan, execu-
tive vice president, "and we've pre-
pared three days of meetings. We re-
ceived telephone calls from countries
including Canada and India who want to
talk to us about dubbing into various
languages."
The Kitchen dubs 50 episodes of
telenovelas a month for the French market.
"The call for product in French is
huge, and we retain the services of the
finest Parisian actors for that purpose,"
Ms: Kaplan said. "Dubbing for the French
and German markets is more expensive."
The next generation of telenovela, Ms.
Kaplan said, would be tailored toa younger
audience. "There are a number of chan-
nels in theUS," she said, "some in Miami
that are looking. to create 'The OC'-
meets-telenovela brand of entertainment."
Countywide figures for 2005 film pro-
ceeds. could .be subject to an upward
review. The feature -film version of the
hit 1980s TV series "Miami Vice" prob-
ably contributed -more than the $25 mil-
lion the production team estimated, Mr.
Peel said. The cast and crew filmed in
the county from _June to October but
made an unscheduled return in Decem-
ber for three. weeks:

In the meantime, the Greater said Jeff Peel, director of the
Miami Convention & Visitors Miami-Dade''Mayor's Office
-Bureau is engaging in media re-. of Film and Entertainment.
"There is some talk that they
may come back and do some
more."
Meanwhile, Mr. Di Persia is
trying to bring a copy of"Christ-
mas in Miami" to show here.
"We were trying to screen
the movie here on the same day
as in Italy," he said, 'but we
didn't have a subtitled version.
Since the film isn't going to be
released here, the company isn't

Bureau officials assisted in

months, said spokeswoman
Ginny Gutierrez, and county is
to host a team from bridal maga-
zine Bella Sposa next month.
One of Italy's largest broadcast
networks, RAI TV, is to visit
this winter while five journal -
interested in stumping up cash
for a communications cam-
paign."
That, -said Mr: Di Persia, is
because the -brand of humor is
culturally 'specific. "The com-
pany . doesn't want to open in
the'US, he said, "because it's
unlikely to make a lot of money
iri Miami."
Di'Persia'said he would
continue to try toacquire a sub-
titled version for screening in
February or March, probably at
'=rthe Regal Cinema in Miami
Beach.
Meanwhile, South Florida film
officials expect to hear the fate
of proposed "TV crime series
"Dexter"" this week. A team from
Showtime shot a pilot last sum-
mer based on the books of Co-
conut Grove native Jeff Lind -
.say.
"A TV deal can prove better
from an economic standpoint,"
said Mr. Peel. "Serious TV pro-
vides more bang for your buck.
A domestic series or two brings
the dollars and the attention.
That goes for `CS1: Miami' too,
which, although the crew only
visits for a few days at time,
brings healthy profits." '
Film office representatives
continue to visit shows in the
US and abroad to promote the
county. They plan to participate
in a trip to Spain with the Bea-
con Council and outreach ef-
forts in Los Angeles, New York
and London this year.
