(OYC), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering students by providing education and recreation services to chil- dren in the Overtown area, recently received a $500,000 grant from The Children's Trust to fund the Out -of -School Program during the 2005- 2006 academic year. The Trust is a dedicated source of revenue estab- lished by voter referen- dum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami -Dade County. "Without the continued support and commitment from the Children's Trust, there would be many fam- ilies in Overtown whose children would not be able to experience a quality after -school and summer program," states Carla Penn, Executive Director of the Overtown Youth Center.
