Regent International Hotels, founded in the former British ter- ritory in 1970, is working on two condo -hotel proj ects here — Re- gent Bal Harbour and Regent South Beach. Swire Properties, which arrived in Miami in 1980, was the first strong Far East brand to test the market, said Steve Owens, presi- dent ofthe company. "When Swire came here, people asked, 'Who is Swire?' and in turn, people in the company asked, `Why Miami?"' said Mr. Owens. "When we first turned up here, we usedHSBC inNew York, and people asked, `Who's that?' Now the bank's on Brickell Avenue. At that time, Swire was HSBC's only client in Miami, so I think our presence here influenced the bank's choice to come to Miami." Other branches ofthe Brickell company's business have flour- ished, he said.
