Wheels to Work program provides District 5 residents cars
SUCCEED
continued from 7D
and the Puerto Rican Chamber
of Commerce. Individuals no-
minated by a community sta-
keholder wererequired to have
low to moderate income; reside
within District 5; demonstrate
a transportation hardship;
and provide proof of employ-
ment for the past year.
'The City of Miami is home
to many working, but poor
families. Owning a dependable
car can be the difference bet-
ween and unem-
ployment, accessing childcare
or participating in childrens
school activities,' said Ha,
demon. "Many of these fa-
milies also have poor credit
history, preventing them from
obtaining a loan necessary
to purchase a car. Wheels to
Work will allow these families
to become car owners, many
for the first time, and build
their credit rating.'
Although credit history
was not used to determine
eligibility, new car recipients
are required to attend MLKE-
DC workshops on financial
literacy, life skills, and vehicle
maintenance. They are also
required to perform eight
hours of community service
per month for 36 months
beginning February 2016 at
a location provided by the
MLKEDC.
The car recipients will make
payments to MLKEDC for 12
months to repay the loan.
'We buy the cars at whole-
sale price for the recipients,'
King said.'If they do not
adhere to the program we will
repossess cars but through
the financial literacy course
and the life skills course that
will not be an issue.'
MLKEDC Wheels to Work
program is established to
provide low-income residents
of District 5 an opportunity to
obtain a car loan to purchase
reliable, affordable car that
will assist them with maintai-
ning employment and pursu-
ing education or job training,
cording to a statement Part-
rships with companies
the banking, automotive, and
insurance industries helped to
ensure that residents received
cars at discounted prices and
re provided with affordable
automobile insurance co -
age.
'Most of the time poor people
don't live where the jobs are so
they have to be able to leave
their community to get work;
McQueen said. 'That's where
the cars come in.
Miami Commission Chair
Keon Hardemon shows off
the cars that went to six
District 5 residents as part of
his Anti -Poverty Initiative.
Oakland tech revolution to be revitalized
DIVERSITY
continued from 7D
concerns Oakland could slip
into a pattern followed by
other cities: While tech has
created thousands of high -
paying jobs, those are rarely
held by African Americans
and Latinos, who make up
ere than half of Oakland
sidents.
r Oakland is facing a 'pi-
votal moment," says Cedric
Brown, chief of communi-
ty engagement at the Kapor
Center for Social Impact,
which aims to close the ra-
cial gap in tech.
'With Ubers ent
arrival in 2017, we want to
say: This is what Oakland
s. We want to be the hub for
tech equity in the nation,' he
sa
id.
Uber told USA TODAY at
has embarked on a 'liste-
ning tour' of Oakland, sit-
ting down with leaders from
non -profits and advocacy
organizations. The compa-
ny is working hard to be
thoughtful about how we
partner with local leaders
to strengthen the neigh-
borhood together; said Uber
spokeswoman Laura Zapata.
Some 200 tech firms are
located in Oakland, inclu-
ding music streaming ser-
vice Pandora and search
engine Ask.com, occupying
1.7 million square feet, says
Colin Yasukochi, director
of research and analysis at
CBRE.
Property managers are re-
habbing historical proper-
ties to make them friend-
lier to tech companies and
other c e professions
fleeing San Francisco's high
rents. And tech companies
are eyeing outposts here to
recruit and keep cop talent,
many of whom make their
homes in the East Bay.
And that, says Rainbow
PUSH's Rev. Jesse Jackson,
puts Oakland at a -
roads: 'Will people and com-
munities of color be included
in the tech revolution or left
behind?"

road trips, Jenkins said.
Low prices also have moved the
U.S. Energy Information Admini-
stration to lower its forecast for the
year. The administration expects a
gallon of regular unleaded gas to
average $2.03 for the year, 37 cents
lower than the initial estimates and
40 cents lower than last year's ave-
rage.
The EIA also had projected that
monthly gas prices could rise to
$2.56 in July, at the height of the
summer driving season. Now the
agency has revised its projection to
$2.18 in June instead.
