2014 Overtown Music & Arts Festival
The spirit of Community permeated through the Overtown Music and Arts Festival(OMAF) on
Saturday, July 19, 2014. Produced and curated by Headliner Market Group(HMG), the 2014
Festival had the highest attendance at approximately 5,000 festival goers.
The entertainment lineup featured a mix of bold names such as Teedra Moses, Jaguar Wright,
R&B singer Case, Sebastian Mikael, TV One's R&B Divas star Keke Wyatt and Grammy nominated
soul singer Raheem Devaughn who closed out the day with his awe-inspiring performance. The
artists were backed by South Florida's own Deep Fried Funk band and Mr. Larry Dogg performed
a stellar tribute performance to Frankie Beverly & Maze.

The Youth Zone @ Overtown Music & Arts Festival
Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) and The Green Family Foundation created the
FIRST EVER Youth Zone at the Overtown Music & Arts Festival. This area exclusively served the
youngest community resident and festivalgoer's. T.E.E.S. provided all youth zone participants
with book bags filled with an official festival t-shirt and toiletry items. A local biker group, One
Fist Ladyz also provided free book bags filled with school supplies. Finally 103.5 The Beat
hosted the Youth Zone stage and provided a board game tent filled with giveaways.

The festival's website had over 65,000 hits.
TELEVISION
HMG created a spectacular commercial which was broadcast on Comcast for 30 days.
RADIO
HMG had an extensive heavy radio campaign with Cox stations, Hot 105 and 99 Jamz
in addition to promotional banners on their website. They also hosted a "live remote"
from the location in addition to their on -air personalities co -hosting various segments of
the concert.

Festival sets out to put a positive spin on Overtown

Overlown: for locals. the name can instantly paint a
picture of poverty, crime and dilapidated properties.
The frequent headlines with words like 'Shooting"
or -killing' don't help the neighborhood's Image.
either.
But that's not the Overtown that Michael Gardner.
CEO of Headliner Market Group (HMG). wants
people to see. He is inviting locals and non locals
alike to the downtown Miami neighborhood

While this is the fourth year of the festival. it is the
lust year Gardner and HMG are quarterbacking the protect.
'When you think of Overlown al the present lime. you only think of the negative. but it's nth in
culture.- said Gardner. 40- who took on the project atter being introduced to the idea by the City
Commission six months ago.
The Overtown of earlier decades was a renowned black neighborhood tilled with restaurants,
grocery stores. barber and beauty shops. tailors. doctor and law ollices. a milliner, local insurance
agents. and even a soda wafer bottling facility called Cola Nip — all black -owned and operated.
For blacks. Overlown, the 'Harlem of the Scuth.- was once a beacon of pride. hope and
opportunity.
All that changed during the 1960s with construction of Interstate 95 and Interstate 395, which
sliced through the neighborhood. ds overpasses lowering over its homes and buildings. Property
values sank. and Overlown lost its prestige.
Gardner. known for making LIV Night Club one of Miami Beach's moss-successlul dubs. took on
the task of promoting and overseeing the music festival with a vision of reinventing `Miami's Little
Broadway. another nickname Overtown once hold
The festival is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m, Saturday on Northwest Third
Avenue between Eighth and 111h streets. in the heart of Overtown's business district. Gardner
and HMG say they are bringing In a lot of bra names born the R&B, soul. gospel and jazz scene to

necessarily
know it by
consulting

They'll talk for houm about Chicago blues, New Orleans jazz. the Harlem Renaissance and
so-called "L.A. race music,j1 but Miami has largely been left out of that national conversation.
Thankfully, the Overtown Music & Arts Festival will pay homage to that rich. too -often untold
legacy.
