I wish I could be present at this hearing to testify in support of this, but unfortunately, I am out of town. As you know, Friends of Marine Stadium has worked very hard over the last three years to assist -and advocate for the restoration of the Marine Stadium. It is very important for us that the Stadium setting be used -as this is a very good way to expose people to the site and see its potential. When there are such events, we sometimes try to have a presence there (such as a booth) so that we can continue to introduce our initiative to the Miami community. I understand that the City of Miami is in a financially difficult position and as a result, additional revenues are very important. The $2,500 fee which is proposed represents a significant increase over the previous fee of $1,000-but much less than the fee structure as enacted by the City last summer. That fee -for a parking lot in poor condition with no utilities -would have made it virtually unaffordable to potential users and promoters. I also recommend that the fee be reduced for set up and tear down days, as most users will only use a portion of the whole surface during those days. The goal here should be to encourage as much use of this area as possible -and not to make it prohibitively expensive to do so. Both the new fee and a smaller fee for setup and breakdown days represent a fair compromise, balancing the City's needs yet keeping the site affordable and allowing us to have events which contribute to our community and showcase the potential of the Marine Stadium setting.
