rolling out new MBA r
BY TOM HARLAN
Local business schools urge
students to do their homework
before choosing from a growing
list of master's degree programs.
Competition is increasing in
the South Florida market of MBA
offerings as two local universi-
ties and a nationally recognized
business school launch new pro-
grams.
Barry University in spring
plans to start an evening MBA
program in Coral Springs and in
January start a Saturday pro-
gram at its Miami campus.
Florida International University,
which has MBA programs geared
to executives and young profes-
sionals, is this year adding a
downtown Miami MBA program
and a Chinese track to its inter-
national master's program.
And Northwestern
University's Kellogg School of
Management is to open a branch
at the Hyatt Regency Coral
Gables in January. It plans to
offer an executive MBA for mid -
career executives and senior
managers. Class meetings are to
take place weekends with two
live-in weeks per academic year
for two years following a tradi-
tional October -June calendar,
school officials said. '
Northwestern officials de-
cided to open a program
school has expanded into
rope and Asia during the
decade.
Though SquthFloridahas

ficials say they have seen
overwhelming interest from'
spective students and expect
South Florida program to till
in its niche.',
"I think each MBA prop
brings its unique strengths,"
said. "The Kellogg MBA man

"There's a lot of competitio
said Alex Sevilla, director of
University ofFlorida's MBA p
gram. "But' if in the world
business schools we don't 1
competition, then we proba
aren't doing a good job teach
it to our students."
University of Florida offici
started a South Florida MBA p
gram in October after study
the market, which accounts
12% to 15% of the universit
700 master's students.
Many students told OF o
cials they wanted to attend
school's nationally ranked p
gram but didn't have time
make a five-hor •trip
Gainesville for classes one
month.
"We didn't -want to lose th
in South candidates." Mr. Sevilla_s
