FIU hunt aims to have new president to start fall semester
THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
Apresidential search committee at Florida
International University held an initial meet-
ing Tuesday, laying out a timeline for the
process of selecting a new leader.
Former FIU president Mark Rosenberg
abruptly announced his resignation in
January, later explaining that he had"caused
discomfort" fora female colleague. Kenneth
lessen, the university's chie ffinancial officer,
was named interim president.
The 15-member search committee in-
cludes several FiU trustees and faculty
members, a student, and a member of the
state university system Board ofGovemors.
The committeealso includes influential FIU
alumni such as Barbara Lagoa, a federal
appellate judge and former state Supreme
Court justice.
Bill Funk, who leads executive search
firm R. William Funk & Associates, said an
initial pool of candidates probably will be
established "sometime in mid -June."
A first round of candidate interviews
is eyed for late June. From that group of
candidates, finalists will be determined and
invited to campus for further interviews in
July. The committee will aim to select a
new president who would be able to begin
the job before the start of the fall semester,
Mr. Funk said.
The committee will conduct the search
under a new state law that, in part, provides
a public -records exemption for information
about candidates. Information about finalists
would be made public.
FiU trustees Chairman Dean Colson said
the law presents a "new burden" for the
search committee. "it is critically impor-
tant that committee members protect the
confidentiality of every prospect and every
candidate," Mr. Colson told the committee
Tuesday.
Each committee member was asked to si gn
a non -disclosure agreement certifying that
they will not reveal applicants' information.

ous stages of searching for new presidents.
The other three schools are the University
of Florida, the University of North Florida
and Florida Gulf Coast University.
Gables parks plan for $60 million parks bond referendum
BY ABRAHAM GALVAN
Coral Gables commissioners
agreed last week not to place on
the November general election
ballot a $60 million bond refer-
endum that would have financed
construction improvements for
the War Memorial Youth Center
and Phillips Park.
Instead of letting voters decide
on the construction project, city
officials preferred staff to come
back with improved or alternative
ways to fund the projects'renova-
tions and expansion.
"1 think that taxation is some-
thing that I'm opposed to raising,"
said Commissioner Jorge L. Fors
Jr., "but really the problem with
taxes for me is taxation without The cost for doing a S60 mil- "We would take out the entire

debt service," she said.
For example, a home assessed at
$250,000 would pay about S58 a
year for the life of the 20-year bond
to cover the debt and a $750,000
home would pay $ 173 extraayear,
Ms. Gomez explained.
The War Memorial Youth at
405 University Dr. would cost an
estimated$42 million torepairand
expand, while Phillips Park at 90
Menores Ave. would need about
$8 million in improvements.
"Forme, the youth center is not
my number one priority on the list
of priorities in the Parks Master
Plan," said Vice Major Michael
Mena. "Obviously very important
to our park system, but just from
my perspective of allocating sig-
nificant dollars, my thing is that
I've pushed and fought to improve
our park system as much as I can
within the confines of our budget,
and it has been to try to elevate
the rest of our park system around
the youth center."
One of the bigger concerns is
similar to what is currently hap-
pening with the city's planned
mobility hub, he said.
"i have real concerns about
even the numbers that we're
using, not because there hasn't
been a good faith effort to come
up with reasonable numbers, but
because numbers are changing
drastically right now," the vice
mayor said. "I'm not comfortable
with the current plan as proposed
and am happy to keep working
on it. 1 don't know that we can
meet the November deadline.
I'm absolutely on board, but i
just think we need to flesh out
in today's construction industry
and with what maybe wait a few
months on how things would look
like and do this at the right time
that makes sense."
Renewed Miami River Commission funding in state budget
BY Mutu.nv BOWDEN
If approved by Gov. Ron De -
Santis, Florida's fiscal 2022-'23
budget will provide $150,000 to the
Miami RiverCommission through a
Florida DepartmentofEnvironmen-
tal Protection contract, said Horatio
Stuart Aguirre, the commission's
chairman.
The contract would require that
reimbursable funding be spent on
job -generating work directly im-
proving water quality.
"The Scavenger Water Decon-
tamination Vessel removes floating
debris," Mr. Aguirre said, "while
treating 600,000 gallons ofwaterper
hourthroughadecontaminauon sys-
tan and injecting 150,000 liters of
oxygen into the water, significantly
improving water quality along the
Miami River's state-owned sub-
merged lands."
The Department ofEnvironmen-
tal Protection defines submerged
lands as `tidal lands, islands, sand-
bars, shallow banks and lands wa-
terward ofthe ordinary or mean high
water line, beneath navigable fresh
water or beneath tidally influenced
waters."They were acquired along
with statehood on March 3, 1845.
Keeping them clean involves
hiring a professional company five
days a week, Mr. Aguirre said, to
remove i I legal dumping and provide
landscaping maintenance.
The Miami River Commis-
sion was founded by the state is
1998 to be the river's "principal
advocate and watchdog, ensuring
that river projects are funded and
implemented ina proper and timely
manner" — a broad mandate that
includes uniting an governmental
agencies, businesses and residents
in the area on river issues.
Originally the commission re-
ceived appropriations directly from
the state's coffers, but since 2017
funding has been pulled together
piecemeal through the county and
other stakeholders.
